Do I remove more “junk” from my poor Pekin’s leg?

Sally is fine! I am over the moon. The second vet put her 10 days of antibiotics and says she is an otherwise happy, healthy duck. Thank God I didn't listen to the first vet!!!!!

    Bone infection

SALLY IS FINE! The second vet we went to said that he would not euthanize a healthy duck. The infection is being treated with Baytril for ten days and in the meantime, Sally had adapted to her bum leg. She remains happy and healthy. Thank goodness I saw the second vet. Thank you for recommending...

Do I remove more “junk” from my poor Pekin’s leg?

I AM THRILLED TO REPORT THAT THE SECOND VET SAID THAT SALLY IS A HEALTHY DUCK!!! He says that no way would he have put her down because she is alert. Sally in on oral antibiotic (Baytril) for the next ten days. This vet sees many ducks/chickens and says that Sally will live with her leg the way...

Do I remove more “junk” from my poor Pekin’s leg?

Thank you for weighing in. I know I need to do the right thing for Sally and if the vet tomorrow agrees with the original vet, then there's a decision I may need to make right then and there. This vet is more geared toward hobby farm animals and so his opinion holds more weight. Tomorrow could...

    Bone infection

I greatly appreciate your kind words. Euthanizing her today would not have been ok, and so I cancelled the appointment. I see another vet on Thursday and I will continue to see that she is comfortable and happy, eating, drinking, and swimming (I have to place her in the pool, and then take her...

    Bone infection

Yes, I agree that suffering is not an option for our beloved pets. We have to always do the right thing. Thank you for sharing your stories with me. I really appreciate it. Sally remains happy and eating, drinking, just being her duck self!

    Amputation of Pekin Leg?

That is how I feel about Sally. She is such a strong duck. I don't see her giving up, so why should I? Thank you for your words of encouragement. We're on the same page!

    Amputation of Pekin Leg?

The closest avian vet is about three hours away. I'm thinking that maybe I could call them and send them her x-ray for someone there to consult on. I think I will go ahead and do that. Meanwhile, Sally is being her normal happy self.

Do I remove more “junk” from my poor Pekin’s leg?

Thank you for asking! She is doing great! We go to a farm animal vet on Thursday. It's the closest I'm going to get as far as finding an avain specialist. He said he's willing to proceed with antibiotic treatment in order to try something. I hope he feels the same way after examining her and...

    Bone infection

It’s always so hard to say goodbye to these lovely, beautiful creatures in our lives. I’m sorry you had to go through that and I totally understand. I do want to ask you how did you know that they were approaching the end. I’m watching Sally like a hawk (excuse the pun) because the second I see...

    Amputation of Pekin Leg?

I agree with you completely. My boyfriend looks at Sally and says there’s no reason to put her down. But the x-ray shows that she’s developed this horrible bone infection that can lead to sepsis which is a terrible way to die. That’s why the vet has recommended euthanizing her. I had another...

    Amputation of Pekin Leg?

So the vet said that they neither do intravenous antibiotic treatment nor amputations. The only thing he can offer are oral antibiotics to try to kill this infection. I have the appointment for Thursday which means I do not have to go forward with euthanizing Sally tomorrow at 10 (with the...

    Amputation of Pekin Leg?

Thank you very much for all of these comments. It gives me hope that an amputation is an option. I don’t have oodles of money but I would be willing to put a nice some toward her recovery. I am awaiting a call back from the vet to find out more about this surgery.
