Ughhhhhh, what do you all do about Flies!? They're everywhere. It's really creeping me out. How do I get rid of them? They're all over the chicken poop, and just multiplying by the coop. Absolutely disgusting. They're big flies too!
I've lost two to raccoons, two nights in a row. They took one, came back broke the lock and took the another. We moved the remaining hen into the garage the third night, and fixed the lock. would you know it that son of a ***** came back!
Raccoons don't always leave behind parts of the bird...
Thank you so much everyone. I feel much better. I was really worried it was something we were doing. I guess I will get 2 new ladies next weekend. I didn't realize they had such a short life span.
I feel like every time I come for advice on here it is because one of my hens died.... wait that is what I do. Here we go again.
Since 2013 we've lost 3 ladies to animal attacks, (raccoon /fox,) and this season we have lost 2 randomly.
I am concerned about the two that passed away this...
He did a good job didn't he? :)
Before was about half the size, maybe a little more. We built a skylight in the old coop for ventilation purposes. She laid in that coop all last summer without any issue.
This coop is bigger and, has the window as well as a vent on the top.
She is ok with...
Hi everyone!
A few months ago I introduced 2 new Rhode Island Red hens to my small flock. I already had a Rhode Island Red, and an Easter Egger. The introduction did not go well. It took about a month for the Easter Egger to stop attacking the new hens, she was very aggressive and not happy...
oh my goodness! I've done all of your suggestions. The wounds healed, I put the new chickens with the old, but separated them with chicken wire.
Yesterday I had them in the runner together. Our runner is 3 ft by 8 (+) feet. They did ok I guess. At 4:00 they free ranged. The old chicken was...
Thank you so much for the advice! Admittedly, I just plopped the other two in there and figured it would be ok. Their current coop is quite large I never thought it would be an issue. I have plenty of room at my place to separate them and start over.
We are also in the process of building a...
Hi everyone.
I had hens, a Rhode Island Red, and an Easter Egger. On Sunday my husband and I decided to get two new Rhode Island Red hens, about a year old. I figured it was better to introduce 2 new hens as opposed to 1, to make the transition easier for all hens involved. (I do understand...
I'm so sorry! That's horrible. :( my husband wouldn't even let me go out to bury her. He knew I couldnt see her like that. If you dont mind, how close to your house was she? Checkers was Right next to her coop and our house.
Thanks! If it was at night, I'd be less freaked out. its the whole daytime thing that has me in a panic. Also, how did we not hear this attack?! the coop is right next to our house. Was it that quick?
.I was so not prepared for my husband to come inside today and say "Checkers is dead, and I cant find Reaces." Good news is we did find Reaces, but I'm on a crazy search to find out what killed Checkers.
We let our ladies out at noon today, they free range on our acre. At 4:00 my husband went...
We think it was a raccoon. We dont have bears, mink, or weasles. also, we only woke up ro feathers. whatever it was took them away. Whatever it was, is smart enough to break our lock. In hindsight our lock wasnt the best. I never thought something would figure it out.
I am on Long Island as well. Our coop is right next to our house, it is just how it worked out. We do not have electricity in it. The chickens were ok all winter. We kept them in the coop and they showed no signs of being cold or discontent. They actually cuddled together. Fresh hay does a lot...
