    courtnics quail killing each other

Sorry for the delay in responding....been a busy couple of weeks here. As you indicted would occur, I came home and one of my hens had a pretty nasty gash. We quarantined her with a hide and a bedding section. A couple days later is is doing wonderful. Several of the males were getting pretty...

    courtnics quail killing each other

As a "noob" I am approaching the point of my first ratio separation. Right now I have them separated in a mixed gender (female dominate) 7 in one cage and 7 in the other. I am still waiting to firmly determine gender, at which point I'll separate 1:4. So far they have not shown any aggressive...

    Coturnix Quail Male/Female Ratio?

The timing of this could not have been better. My "Cots" are almost 5 weeks and I'm fairly certain I have 8F and 6M. I plan to have a 1:4 ratio until I can hatch more. Per welcomed responses, I will separate my smaller males (not breeding) from the other 10 until they fight or are large enough...

Japanese Jumbo Quail Question (First Timer)

Jumbo Coturnix/Japanese/Pharaoh Quail are just larger eggs. The species/breed is no different, just the "cream of the crop", so to speak. Ideally, breeders withhold the largest eggs to breed from so that you have larger stock. This is great for those that are raising the quail for meat/eggs...

    another injury :-(

TwoCrows, Is the "branches/hides" idea a default housing recommendation or just under circumstances of observed distress? Additionally, will adding "hides" impact enclosure capacity?

    help with new incubator needed

Great cleaning tips, thanks guys! As far as the water, perhaps a wet sponge is appropriate? Cutting a sponge into pieces and wetting it, then placing in incubator for a few hours/days prior to actually adding eggs. Add more sections to achieve appropriate humidity - especially during...

How To Set Egg (w/air sac defects) At An Angle In Brinsea Mini Advanced?

I read similar advice prior to the arrival of my eggs. However the shipping took so long I was paranoid about allowing yet another day to pass. Was I being too worrisome? Time of shipping was about 7 days. Not knowing when they were laid added to my concern.

I have quail! -- Thanks to YOU!

Thanks for the advice TwoCrows! I did indeed crush up the food, shortly after taking those pictures. They have been eating and drinking very well. Messy little creatures for sure. Lol As for the cage, it is indoors (garage) so predators should not be an issue. I will reconfigure the feeder and...

I have quail! -- Thanks to YOU!

Indeed I am brand new. Thank you for the warm welcome! Real quick, I have an update on my quail situation - I hatched 14/21 viable eggs. A 15th egg zipped but did not make the escape. An "egg-topsy" revealed the expulsion of innards from the back end. I thought it was the yolk sack but...
