    How much death is normal?

I just lost my third hen in 18 months. Each death has been something non-contagious that progressed over a week or so, and none of the other birds have ever been affected. I believe the first girl died from gapeworm or some other respiratory issue. The second went lethargic and died when I tried...

Lethargic chicken, runny white poop stuck to tail feathers

Hello, I first noticed that Cutie Chick's feces weren't normal about a week ago, but she seemed to be acting normally so foolishly I let her be, and I went out of town for a few days and forgot about it. Anyway, she is definitely worse than she was last week. Her tail feathers have been plucked...

I need all the ground cover options for my run

I’ve only been doing this chicken thing for a year but I’ve been very happy with my wood chipped run. After the chickens cleared out all the grass I put down a few bags of coarse mulch (each bag is only about $3). I’ve thrown in a few more bags twice since then. I also rake in dead leaves in the...

Combs and wattles turning black in summer?

LOL, yes I could wipe it off:gigHow foolish of me! I guess my recent poultry deaths have made me extra paranoid. Lesson learned that when your girls will eating juicy melon rinds they will get pretty dirty in the wattle and comb! 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Combs and wattles turning black in summer?

I just noticed this morning that my girls' combs seem to be starting to turn black from the beak up. Their wattles don't look so good either. I have three 1-year-old hens and all three of them seem to have this issue to some degree or another. It must've just started in the past day or so...

Help! Injured chick - head trauma?

Yes! I'm happy to report that Glory pulled through and seems to be no worse for wear. 😅

Help! Injured chick - head trauma?

We were letting our 4-week-old chicks out to explore the yard. My 9-yr-old was trying to catch this Americauna and he accidentally jumped on her from a height of about 3 feet. Looks like she's got some head trauma--blood in the eye and on the beak. She's lethargic but still breathing. Anything I...

Sick chicken: lethargic, lying down, droopy comb, runny white stool (RIP)

It wasn't like a seizure...it was more her head was flopping from side to side as her neck went limp. I feel bad because I think that was my fault, but I also think she may not have survived anyway so I feel some relief that it was over fairly quickly for her.

Sick chicken: lethargic, lying down, droopy comb, runny white stool (RIP)

This afternoon I noticed my 11-month-old Buff Orpington was lethargic -- lying down in the run kind of hiding in a corner, no interest in the kitchen scraps, her comb was a little droopy, and she had some runny white poop stuck to her tail feathers (see pictures). She had no other external...

Mild(?) Frostbite--does it need treatment? If so, what?

Hi there! This is my first winter with chickens and I just noticed what I believe is frostbite on the combs and wattles of my four birds. Admittedly I hadn't been looking too closely at them for the previous few weeks, so I don't know how long this has been going on. We live in Utah and temps...
