    We live in the north of sunny New Zealand. When it rains or gets a bit windy our current hens and roosters just perch under an open (but roofed) structure, very rarely do they go and perch in the houses, except to lay. They love to play and dust themselves in the bamboo which, also provides shelter.

    Hi all, we are currently raising 10 chicks for egg laying. We are going to build a new house for them. The chicks are totally free range and range over a 1/4 of an acre so will not be shut up all day and night in the house. My question is what is the ideal size of the house to cater for 24 birds...

    Thanks. Am I to assume then if one clips a young hen, say 8-9 weeks old the primary feathers will not grow again as does the adult hens?

    Hi all, our chicks are now 8 weeks old. At what age can you clip a wing please? They have now gone from jumping to flying! Thanks.

    Hi, thanks for response. We use a suspending type feeder, but on the ground. It is large enough (5kg) to feed our 10 chicks.

    Layers, we now feed morning, noon and evening, which seems to work for us and the little ones, just wanted to know how much feed per bird per day? They are growing well and are very healthy as we started them on medicated chick starter crumble.
