Thank you, Diamond Dan and DT12. I will leave the fat there. These are my oldest birds. (6 months) and I didn't know if they would begin to taste gamey at that age. I am letting them rest in the fridge at the moment. We plan to have them for dinner on Thursday. Thanks again, Dave
Hey folks.
Once again I come to you with a question. I have just processed four quail. Three of them had quite a bit of fat on them. (I skinned them but left the fat for now.) Do you leave the fat and let it cook with the meat or do you trim them and add a fat like bacon, oil, or butter...
Thanks to all for your wonderful responses. I mistakenly thought that genetics were the prime contributor. Many of the quail entering day three have "fixed" themselves. I still have four - out of 27 - that are in tough shape. I will apply tape wraps this afternoon and hope for the best. Thanks...
I have 7 new coturnix with splayed legs born yesterday and today. I am going to wait a couple days to see if things improve. My question is this - Should I try to fix them or should I cull them to get rid if that genetic trait from my flock? I tried fixing five from my first hatch last spring...
Sunday was supposed to be "hatch" day. I had 6 hatch on Sunday. One died shortly after that. Today 15 more have popped out. Five or six of them have very splayed legs but the others appear healthy. I am going to keep the lid on the 'bator for another day and see what happens.
Thanks to all for...
@ Field... There are/were 49 Coturnix eggs in there.
@ HenOnA... Thanks. This is helpful. I already own the batteries since I use them in our large boat. I always carry a spare which could easily be taken out when the boat isn't in use.
Thanks for the encouragement. I assumed they would all be dead or deformed. Perhaps there will be a few that make it. I have 49 in the incubator. <twiddles faster> :)
So, 36 hours before the expected hatch the power went down in my shop without my knowledge. The eggs were without heat for eight and a half hours. When I went to check this morning the temp was 71. I restored power immediately but am very frustrated. Don't really have a question or know what to...
Thanks Feedman77. I have been running at 40-45% humidity which is basically our local atmosphere here by Lake Superior right now. I will add a wet cloth on Thursday. Thanks again, Dave
Thanks, Paneubert, for your help. Just to be extra safe I think day 14, which is Thursday, I will pull the turner and bump up the humidity. In my first hatch I had one come early and was caught/crippled in the turner. They are delicate little buggers. Thanks again, Dave
PS. Should I turn them...
Hey folks.
Just as a refresher for me, and possibly others, on which day do I take out the autoturner and bump up the humidity? This will be my second hatch. My first was poor - 8 out of 48 - but those were shipped eggs. This time around I am using the eggs from my quail. (Eggs from three hens...
