    will this be ok?

Chickens will eat just about anything. In a pinch give them variety and let them choose: fruits, vegies, grain. I have supplemented wild birdseed when I'm low on feed since a run to town is about 30 miles!

    Special feed for Molting chickens...

Feathers are made from protein so they need a protein boost. What is protein for you is protein for chickens. I like giving them yolks of hardboiled eggs also. Fats and oils (a pat of butter) will help keep their oil glands well stocked for preening so the feathers are shiny and healthy...

What treat did your chickies get today?

It's 28 degrees in the morning in December on the western cascades so I favor my old grandmother's trick and cook a little oatmeal for the girls. It warms their innards and from the slow cold start they warm up, take off and are happy all day.

    Meat Leftovers

Chickens are known to eat anything. If they are free range like mine, I say let them eat what they know is good. If they have basic grain in their coop and can venture out to eat bugs, worms, etc, more power to them. They seem to know what is good for them so let them choose. I found my...

    Help with finding coop plans

There's lots out there online if you want to look. Also your local agricultural extension service (phone book) or ag college nearby are very helpful with usually free plans. I agree with the shed idea and since your husband is a carpenter, keep a look out for recycled windows from remodels...

Getting a coop and chickens today! Help!!!

Welcome to the wonderful world of chickens. First, I agree with the person who said put your coop on cement. Critters can dig under overnight if it's dirt floor. Next, get rid of the rooster. Hens will lay just as well without a rooster and unless you want chicks, dispense with the old boy...

    How high can they fly??

A greenhouse, if in a sunny location (for the plants), may be too hot in summer or too cold in winter for chickens (depending on where you live). If you are in a temperate zone, I don't see why you can't do both if you provide roosts for the chickens up high and screen off an area for the...

Do Chickens Care What Color The Inside Of Their Home Is?

About aviary color schemes..... Go in the garage and find all cans of non-toxic paint that you will never need, flat, gloss, whatever. Pour them all in a bucket, mix well, and paint that color. It's economical, fun, and the chickens won't care. I did this and had enough paint leftover to...

    Hi from California~

Hi Blondechicky, I know how it is getting started - you want the best for your chicks. I have been there. My first experience with laying hens was that a lady gave me 2 hens that were still laying. I learned a lot. Later I bought 2 pullets and they were fun. They are all gone. We recently...
