Do Chickens Care What Color The Inside Of Their Home Is?

Right now, the inside of my coop is vis-screen (plastic) covering my faced fiberglass insulation. The parts that I did add color to were done with a stain just to prevent the chipping paint can do. Stain tends to fade and wear off while paint chips, cracks, and peels. The nesting boxes which look like a mini-barn are the same red and grey stain as the outside trim of the coop.

Next spring I hope to add some old boards inside to cover the plastic. So far the birds haven't given the wall material any attention . . . and I hope it stays that way until I can finish it off.

My brooder coop is red inside, the big coop is blue/white/tinted as per what ever was in the oops pile. I find they don't care what color it is, as they WILL fling poop ALL OVER the walls! Yes, poop all over the walls ABOVE chicken head roost level. LOL

That said, a proper sanded, dry, clean surface should take good latex based paint and not peel up. Stains just soak in. Not had a peeling problem yet. Did use exterior washable paint on everything though.

WOW! I've gone in with a broom and dust-mask to wipe down the windows, fixtures, and walls. No way I'd be having curtained windows until and if the chickens are history and grandchildren get the building for their play house as promised (if I ever get rid of the birds). DS says he'll keep the chickens if I don't want them and the grand-babies agree they want chickens more than a play house so the coop remains the coop.

My birds are beautiful. . . but dirty.

Although those are "oops colors" for some reason I love them!!!!!!!!! I usually hate pink but I like the hot pink nesting boxes... I also love the design of your coop. WARNING: I may be experiencing coop envy. Back away...

Here are a few reasons to consider.

paint helps prevent moisture inside the coop, and the things that come with moisture.

Coccidiosis, fristbite, ect. Wood without paint even when it feels dry has air with moisture in it. Paint acts like a seal.

Paint makes the wood eaiser to wipe down on cleaning day.

Chickens can see color!

I don't think the chickens really care what color your coop is as long as its clean, and comfy. That being said you will care! The paint can maby brighten your mood when you clean the coop ect...

Light colors will brighten your coop More light more eggs in winter.

My coop is going to be light green with some light blue, and white. Not sure what thing will be which yet lol.

In the end your chickens will be happy and so will you.

The curtains get a good shaking out and in the laundry every now and again. I hear you about the dust! They must shake it all off when asleep. Dirt piles on the poop board.

About aviary color schemes.....
Go in the garage and find all cans of non-toxic paint that you will never need, flat, gloss, whatever. Pour them all in a bucket, mix well, and paint that color. It's economical, fun, and the chickens won't care. I did this and had enough paint leftover to paint the inside of my shop including the ceiling. As far as those whose chickens are eating paint flecks, let the girls out for a good daily run. They are bored. And if you use Behr paint, it won't peel or flake. If there is enough gloss in the paint you can hose down the inside after one of those all night poop throwing parties. We've all seen evidence of that on occasion. So don't worry about color - make yourself happy. After seeing the wild colors in the pictures on BYC, well, anything goes. Have fun!
