Update...
I’ve had two more eggs laid from the roost, once was a shell-less/rubber egg so I’m guessing it was one of the hens that hadn’t started yet. The other had a paper thin shell and I think it was the first egg from my second Easter Egger.
Yesterday morning we let them out around 11:30...
Yes theyve all been in and out of the nest boxes for weeks now. We’ve had golf balls in there. I’ve inspected my chickens numerous times over the last few weeks and almost all of them “fit the bill” but I think only 3 or 4 of them are actually laying. No egg on the coop floor today but no egg in...
They have access from coop to run 24/7, I just don’t let them out
To free range the yard until later in the afternoon to prevent egg laying in the yard. We have 6 acres of woods so finding them would be next to impossible!
This morning we checked around 10am. Since they are all getting started I’ve kept them in the coop/run the last two or three days until late afternoon.
So my girls are finally getting going! One of my Easter Eggers gave us our first egg three days ago and gave us another today and for the last two mornings we have opened the coop to find a broken, Brown egg on the coop floor right by the door. I know it is not unusual for a brand new layer to...
Thanks for the clarification, i wasn’t sure how long they are referred to as pullets! Back when they were 18-19 weeks I confined them for a week or two but they weren’t ready then. At least one or two have them have pelvic bones wide enough. We do free range them and we have a lot of woods but I...
I know a watched hen never lays But I have 7 23 week old hens, a mix of Rhode Island Reds, Dominiques, Silver Cuckoo Marans and Easter Eggers. I have one mixed breed that is 8 months old. None of them are laying! I know wish the shorter days it might take them a bit but I feel like at least one...
So I did this with both of them today and they are about 1 finger-breadth. One squats and the other does not, both combs and waddles seen larger and darker every day. When the pelvic bone is at 1 finger how long does it usually take before they separate to 2 or more?
I have two RIRs that are 19 weeks old. I’ve noticed their combs/wattles seem like they’ve gotten darker red in the last few weeks. Can’t say I’ve observed any squatting but they usually take off into the woods most of the day when I open the run! I’ll post some pics...do they look like they may...
Thank you for all of the information! We have Dominiques, Cuckoo Marans and Easter Eggers. Looking forward to seeing a colorful basket sooner rather than later!;)
How do you know when your birds are molting? It's my understanding that they are too young for that but our coop/run is always full...
just curious, I have 10 pullets that are 14 weeks now so should be of egg laying age November/December. It isn't always very cold here at that time of year but will pullets still lay their first eggs with shorter days/colder months?
