    Odd neck movement. Comb injured.

I did read the article, but shouldn't they have at least something in their crop since its late afternoon?

    Odd neck movement. Comb injured.

I wasn't sure where the crop was, and when I looked on the two chickens that were doing the weird movements, I couldn't seem to find it. Then, when I checked the chicken that was acting normal, I easily found a big squishy baseball-sized lump. I'm guessing that would be the normal crop. But, I...

    Odd neck movement. Comb injured.

So I've had some issues with my chickens recently. It's been a rough weekend. You can see the backstory here. https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/dead-chicken-sleepy-others-how-to-treat-with-corid-edited-with-pictures-help.1228108/#post-19701748 Anyway now I've seen several of them doing a...

Dead chicken, Sleepy others. How to treat with corid. (edited with pictures)Help!!!!

I can't think of anything they could have gotten into. But yes, it was a tractor and they went all around the yard. Their food is fine. No mold. But I'm sure what could have been in the yard to get them sick.

Dead chicken, Sleepy others. How to treat with corid. (edited with pictures)Help!!!!

Found one dead Welsummer this morning. Now one of my Easter Egger is also very sleepy. They are going to be a year old in May. Yesterday my mom said they were fine but i was out of town. She let them go around the yard in the wagon and said they were fine and thought they were sleepy because it...

    Easter Egger club!

I got four EEs and one of them lays almost white eggs which is really disappointing. The others have pretty nice colors to them though.

    A contest for the duds!

Both of my Welsummers, Tikka and Masala, have yet to show any sign of laying, and they were hatched in May. Both of my barred rocks and at least two of my EEs are laying, but the welsummers don't even squat when i go to pick them up. They just run away, so i guess they wont be laying for a...

Why does my hen do this ANNOYING thing almost every day?

One of my EEs has always been an odd ball. She has always been flightier than the other hens... and has even looked different her whole life. For a while I thought she was going to turn out to be a rooster because her body shape was so different than the other hens. I also thought she may be a...

    Temperament vs. Heat Tolerance

Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens has a breed chart in the front, and since I use this book a lot to reference things, maybe what it has to say will help you? There are sections for "forager" "climate" and "temperament", which seem like the deciding factors for you. Ill put what the...

    Temperament vs. Heat Tolerance

yeah RIRs seem to be hit or miss as far as temperament. I had two a few years ago that I got at the same time. One grew up to be great and very inquisitive and nice, and the other was mean as a snake. She would lunge at me and scratch me every time i went up there to feed or give treats. I've...

    Temperament vs. Heat Tolerance

I live in Alabama and my RIRs and leghorns did great here even though it may now be as hot as where you are. RIRs are known to have "aggressive individuals" though, and one of my girls unfortunately fell into that category. I also had barred rocks and they are very sweet and did fine in the...

    Terrible weather boredom

If you want a way to grow grass without them eating it all before it's established, take something like an old window box and sprout the grass in there. If you put mesh wiring of some kind over the top, they can't peck at or disturb the grass until it's tall enough to grow through.

Anyone use herbs in the coop??

So I just got a new book about chickens, and this one suggests using herbs in the coop. They are apparently good for keeping the coop smelling nice, repelling pests, and keeping the chickens in good health. Does anyone use herbs, and if so how? One thing that concerns me that I haven't read...
