Update on our little chick. After 4-days and 2-sets of splints (step-down fashion), her leg is 100% recovered and she was running around her little pen like crazy. Placed her under her mama after 10:00 pm last night, when mamma was sleeping. Today she was running around with her siblings and...
One of our 3-4 day old babies was missing this morning. I figured she died and mom buried her in the straw. I found her a few hours later-head sticking out of the straw--cold and damp. Brought her in and found splay leg on one leg. Warmed her up in my shirt and made splints. Set up a baby...
I just had the same issue. I’m thinking it’s one of my Rhode Island Reds (because she sits in the coop window and it was right below that spot—what a mess on the wall). I found it this morning when I opened the coop. Though I didn’t have any out as the shells have been VERY strong, I put some...
We got our first egg tonight from one of our 18-week pullets. My guess is the RRI who was singing on Saturday and rooting around one of the nesting boxes. I'm please to say that she did use one of the boxes. Two of the boxes had the straw hollowed out in the middle but only one had an egg. I'm...
Well tonight WAS the first egg! It's smaller than it looks because I have small hands (ring size 4). It's about half the size of a large store bought egg. Happily she (who knows which one but I'd guess the singing RRI) laid in one of the boxes.
Thanks...I wasn't sure what time they typically lay. I work from home, so I let them out of the run during the day and since I lock up the coop and run at night, I'll check then.
Yesterday one of our girls (RRI) was loudly singing so of course I looked around—nothing. The same hen went into one of the nesting boxes and scratched around for a bit. I also saw our roo mount three different hens over the course of the day, one it appeared was our singing RRI. At 18+ weeks...
We had to watch our neighbor’s Tom at his first encounter. He geared up into his crouching hunting mode thinking he was going to have dinner perhaps? Three of the girls stood up to him, nearly shoulder to shoulder, puffed out their chests and he backed off. It was hysterical. Now he just walks...
We thought there would be an issue between our cat Morgan Le Fey (named after Merlin’s consort), however you can see in this picture that the girls intimidate HER!
