I am thinking Roo, but the saddle feathers are looking rounder than my other Orp Roos and the neck feathers are also more rounded than his (cuckoo Lav). The comb/wattles are really red.
BUT I introduced three new hens to the flock and they are beating the mottled up quite badly, which I...
This is Phantom, S/he is a 1 week old mixed breed chick. The breeder I got the eggs from wasn't sure who her mama is, or 100% on who daddy was. She has about 40 hens, and 3 roosters...
Phantom hatched from a light brown egg with what looked like grey(ish) speckles.
I have no idea! Nugget hatched from a blue egg, and Phantom from a light brown. The lady who I purchased the eggs from isn't 100% sure whose mum is whose. But it's likely that Nugget is part Ameracauna, and Phantom is part Jersey Giant. :)
That definitely sounds like your humidity is too high! Are the hatched chicks fluffing up? I'd keep ventilation open for sure, as far as I know it's not supposed to be reduced even during lockdown because of how important oxygen is to be new chicks. But I suppose your mileage may vary! I had to...
You can leave them a little longer than 24 hours if necessary :) and the gunk could just be poop from when it was hatching! And leftover umbilical residue. From what I've read anyway!
No external pips until day 21! Out of my 3 viable eggs 2 hatched within 24 hours. I had to wet the membrane on one and totally didn't see that a second egg was already zipping! She wound up being bound by the membrane and I helped her out and got her sufficiently wet. Both are healthy :) the...
*UPDATE*
The chick has died, however it never would have made it out of its shell, as it had NO Skull, a deformed beak (very short upper beak, no egg tooth) and it's brain growing out of the centre of its forehead.
I did a bit of research and It appears to be a genetic issue, I did let the...
Yeah, I'm hoping that when I break the membrane is stimulates the process. I think taking a more aggressive approach will help this chick. But I'm still very anxious. :(
I'm hesitant to move the membrane at all because it hasn't started pulling back the blood vessels at all.
Right now I am just keeping it in the incubator, keeping the humidity up, and HOPING.
