Chicken found dead in nesting box...

This is an old thread, but just wanted to comment we had exactly the same thing happen today as the original poster - apparently perfectly healthy ISA Brown hen found dead in the nesting box during a hot streak - temps in the high 90s. Guessing that's the issue. RIP Carrot. 😢

Chickens laying at night on roost

We introduced 4 new ISA brown hens to the flock this past summer. They laid in nesting boxes at first, but then one started laying at night onto the poop board. Now another has joined her! We're dismayed to be losing 2 eggs a 'day' from this behavior! The eggs are cracked and dirty when we...

Has anyone seen this? - Mottled/missing feathers on juvenile Buff Orpington

Thanks for all the great suggestions! We were out there today adding two perches, a wheelbarrow of our own full of pine needles and a dust bath. Will be giving them squash and lettuce to welcome back our buff tomorrow. Bought some Blu Kote today so we're all set. I've read a fair bit on BYC...

Has anyone seen this? - Mottled/missing feathers on juvenile Buff Orpington

Wyorp, thanks so much for the insights. It makes perfect sense now. We have 16 sf of space in the coop and 90 sf of space in the run. 6 birds. They spend almost all of their waking time in the run, even when its below zero here in Minnesota. Do you think space may be contributing to the...

There are also a couple dime-sized dark areas on her skin that kind of look and feel like a scab. Sorry, kinda gross but also a concern

Thanks for your reply! We're in Minnesota though and temps have been below zero lately so not many bugs around... :)

Has anyone seen this? - Mottled/missing feathers on juvenile Buff Orpington

Hi, If anyone has insight into what we are seeing on our 8 month old Buff Orpington we would be so grateful! We're first time chicken owners so this is all totally new. As you can see in the photos feathers on her back and sides are mottled looking, giving an appearance almost like wool...
