Ohhh I was just talking to my boyfriend yesterday about maybe trading some of our eggs for some fertile eggs to our neighbor, who has a rooster! I'll see if I can track him down... I might be starting a day late :p
I always planned on free range chickens, since we've got an entire fenced-in acre. We've been here a few years now and they've been enjoying the yard! However we have 3 dogs and it's gotten to the point where the dogs just eat and roll in the chicken droppings as soon as we let them out. Not to...
I do have a small hutch/pen they sleep in during the night, which is where I'll make sure they're getting constant food access in there now. I kept them in the pen full time for several days while the adults got acclimated to seeing them, however it's not inside the chicken coop/run itself. I...
Minor update: I hand fed her several chunks of scrambled egg and she ate it happily. She kept closing her eyes and trying to go back to sleep but she did eat a bunch! I decided to start with that because I still havent seen her drink so I'm not sure how interested she will be in the sugar water...
Yay, I'm glad it's probably not an infection! She has been pecking at the food a bit but I will definitely try the sugar water + scrambled eggs and see if she perks up.
She and another are only 2.5 months old so they do get challenged more - but our yard is big enough the duo generally will...
I was giving them grit before they were free-range, I have not since. Rocky soil around here, plus lots of little gravel around the driveway where they like to peck. It's never been an issue for any of the other birds.
I was not averse to giving her coconut oil just in case - however she did...
I don't remember the exact kind off-hand but it is organic layer crumble, a decent brand (stored in a bin so I don't have the bag right now) but it's not moldy or anything.
Generic scratch that has corn and grains in it, but not often.
We give them table scraps but only like veggie butts/peels...
She is about 2.5 months old, so not laying age yet. I noticed today she was out and just sitting there all puffed up so I quarantined her and gave her some food (crumble and a little scratch to entice her). She did peck at it and ate some so she still has some appetite. I have some probiotic...
I am up in Vancouver and came looking to see if any fellow area peeps were concerned with their flock! I think I'm going to put a sprinkler on a mist under one of their shady tree areas and give them some frozen watermelon. Maybe put a big ice block in the kiddy pool they can drink from. They...
Well it's been an interesting couple of days.... Had a 7th chick hatch yesterday around noon. The only straggler. Today, my favorite chick, the first born, died in my hand. She was ok this morning and then later on my boyfriend realized she wasn't moving when he reached into the brooder. I...
Well, I ended up with six! The 6th hatched early this morning sometime around 5am. No movement or pips from the remaining eggs. Still, 6 isn't bad for my first batch I guess, esp since they were shipped. My luck (or Kiki's luck, I guess, hehe) they're all boys...
Any ideas on colors of them? I...
Well I've got 4 good looking chicks moved into the brooder now. Been a few hours since any have hatched, but when I moved the others , one of the remaining eggs was cheeping... So I'm still hoping to get a couple more. :fl I think I only see one other pip for now, though.
Yes! Feed is the only thing I lack. Everything is cleaned and ready to go. Honestly I was kinda thinking this wouldn't be fruitful and I wouldn't get any babies... now that one is here the mama instincts have kicked in, haha.
