looking for started pullets - central illinois

The co-op I am a member of has a supplier that sells started pullets for $7-$10 per bird, which, after figuring in feed & equipment costs, and time (time is money) it's money well spent and evens out vs. ordering and caring for the day old chicks. Only problem with that reasonably priced...

looking for started pullets - central illinois

it's been years since i posted here. when i first got started in the chicken & egg hobby, this was a source of very good information, and it's good to see the place is still the same. I'm looking to expand my "hobby" into a small business and am looking to find 100, possibly 200 started pullets...

    red swollen vent

thanks for all the info. I sure didn't know it all came out of the same hole. just assumed there were 2 exits. anyway.... caught her last night after they roosted for the evening and got the prep.H and the rubber gloves and popped it back in. messy adventure that neither of us cared for much...

    red swollen vent

THANX A LOT !!! yes, that is what it looks like. I have some prep.H & gloves at the house, so i'll have to try to snag her when she goes in to roost as she's a quick one & hard to catch. thanx a ton for the help !

    red swollen vent

I have a 2 year old rose comb brown leghorn with a swollen vent or a swollen poop-hole. she won't let me get a good look at it (hence - no picture to show you) I assume it's the egg vent, as she IS pooping - all over herself. her behind feathers are matted w/poop cuz this swollen vent is 1/2...

    TOO MANY ROOSTERS?

i think i'm gonna just let it be and play itself out. i personally love the sound of roosters crowing, and i have found that they are also the most fun to watch. my only concern is if they get too aggressive with the girls, then i will have to do something about it. i will need to spend alot of...

    TOO MANY ROOSTERS?

my chix are almost 6 weeks old and i'm beginning to be able to figure out who's who. looks like i've got 3 roosters and 24 hens. this is my second go'round with chickens. i had 2 roosters in my last "flock" but got rid of 1 because he was way into "rough sex". i like having a roo, i like the...

    mystery chick

well, i wouldn't doubt it. this one was the "free exotic chick" mcmurray always gives you. and i would think 99% of the free chicks are males. so this gives me 3 roosters when i only ordered 1. that's gonna be a problem. 3 roos for 24 hens? that's not gonna work, is it? looks like i'm gonna...

    mystery chick

what makes you all think it's a "he"? i'd like to know how to tell the difference. i've had my suspisions, as they are getting to that "pecking order" age and this one is very active in the dominance games.

    mystery chick

this bird was a freebie from mcmurray hatchery, so i have no idea what it is. we call her "dino" as she looks like a dinosaur - very short wings, very long legs, runs fast. 5 weeks old and she is just now starting to feather. looks like she'll have feathered legs, so i'm thinking cochin? not big...

    old enough for greens?

i was just thinking of throwing them a couple leaves of lettuce from the garden once in a while as a treat, but, yes, keeping them on the chick starter/grower till 10 weeks.
