Okay so I had some new ducklings hatch in the past two/ three days. The duck is able to drink, eat, and walk, but its head is always like it's looking down. It can not move it past a certain angle. I looked up wry neck, but this ones head is not tilted at an angle. It's straight down. Does wry...
I have taken babies like this out, placed them in the bowl and immediately returned it back the incubator. And so far, I haven't lost any by only opening the incubator for a very short period of time. I mean at most 30 seconds, no longer. (Then again these were chicks, not ducklings.) Most of...
If it's still absorbing, get a bowl or something that you can lie him in replacement of his shell. Place warm towels in the bowl so whatever is absorbed doesn't get stuck on anything around. Place it back in the incubator and give him time. It should absorb what is left of the yolk sac. As for...
This has been a fun, stressful month. I've hatched over 40 ducklings, 25 turkeys, and 10 chicks. All within a month. Needless to say, I have hatching fever! 💕💕🐣🐣🐣🦆🦃🐓
I know some tie it off about half an inch away from the belly button so it dries faster and that way it's less risk from bacteria. But the two I had hatch like this ended up being fine. Then again, I put them in a fresh incubator to dry faster.
That's the top of the shell with what looks like left over membrane. A lot of mine left behind membrane that had consistency of mucus. But all of them were fine. I even had a couple that hatched with the umbilical like that. It dried about two hours after my duckling was dried and floofed...
I just found this and kinda wanted to post my newest duckling who hatched the day before yesterday. She/he is a Cayuga x Silver Appleyard. Mom is a cayuga and dad is the SA. Can't wait to see what he/she looks like fully grown. I have a couple of older ones, but they have no where near the...
I just had three silver appleyard go broody this year, and I've heard ancona ducks can be pretty stubborn with brooding. Our ducks knew exactly what nest was who's. We had two who nested right beside each other that I had to moved. It took them about two to maybe three hours to come back to...
A camera would be a wonderful idea! That's what we are setting up around our coups and nest areas to keep an eye on things! I'm just happy that we could save the ones we could. They're so sweet and I love SAs so much because their personalities are beautiful. Out of the three broodies we had...
I managed to save a couple of the eggs by keeping them somewhat misted to make sure membrane didn't dry out. When they internally pipped, I found their beaks and made holes if the membrane was thick and gave them time. If I found they were struggling to break the membrane, I'd gently break away...
Update
I made very grim discovery when I went back to check on the nest again. Two very cold, wet ducklings. Two more crushed eggs, one of them probably won't survive. And the previous one that had hatched when I found the chicken on her nest, now has a couple of wounds on it's head. Unsure of...
It definitely was, but once I put it in the incubator it looks like it normally would if it still had the shell around it. I think it got like that when I was moving it from outside to inside. It no longer looks tight and sunken around the duckling anymore. And from what I can see, the duckling...
