I didn't know such a creature existed either, but all the experts on BYC chimed in and said that's what she is. My poor BO; she has spent a good part of her life sitting in the nest on a golfball:)
I have the chattiest Black Australorps, "Chamique" and "Blackjack". They screech at the crack of dawn to be let out of the coop; thank goodness the sun is starting to come up later now. They always have lots to say, and have great personalities. I also have a young Ancona, "Oreo" who has become...
Imagine my surprise when my brown rose comb leghorn "Winner, Winner Chicken Dinner" decided to go broody along with her buddy "Lowrider" the Japanese Bantam Cross. I always thought Leghorns were a breed that were less likely to go broody. Anybody else have a broody Leghorn?
Winner Winner...
Hi from Tucson. We also have to deal with extreme heat for many months on end. I built an open coop for my girls; solid siding on one side and hardware cloth on the other three sides. I also built a permanent roofing structure on the part of the run where the coop sits, so it's pretty much...
I have two black australorps that start screaming bloody murder every morning just before sunrise to let me know that they want OUT of the coop. It's hard to describe the sound they make; sort of a loud, raspy screech. They won't let up until I let them out. Sometimes I hear it in my dream, then...

Thanks for all your replies. I had a feeling she wasn't an EE. She definitely is an interesting bird. I got her at my local feedstore. I also managed to get a japanese bantam mix there. I guess you never know what you're getting; always a surprise!!
I have an Arizona Brown Chicken that I need help identifying. As a chick she looked like an EE with the chipmunk stripes. But she has yellow legs and no muffs. She also has a really flat comb; like a raised bump. She is about 3 months old. Thank you!!
I also make mud holes every day for them to sit in. They love it!! I water down the shady parts of their run in the early morning and they spend most of the day resting in the cool dirt. In the spots where they have dug out a "chicken sized" hole, the water sits like a pool until it sinks in...
My black australorps are by far the loudest and most talkative of all my girls. They screech at full throttle and always have something to say. They will come right up to me and talk and we have a whole conversation with each other:) I love them though; they are gentle and friendly. One of my...
Hi from the east side of Tucson. I also have a chainlink run. This spring I planted several grapevines, passion flower vine, tangerine beauty crossvine, and gourds. What's great about the grape vines is that not only can the girls eat the leaves/fruit, but the leaves will fall off in the winter...
I'm integrating 2 flocks now also; 6-5 week olds and 6-8 month olds. The run has been divided into separate areas for each with light fencing so they can see each other. I've also been letting them out to free range together for about an hour each afternoon. So far, so good. The little ones have...
Hi Fellow Tucsonan. I've used bungee cords, those stretchy cords with the balls on them, zip ties, and believe it or not black binder clips from the office supply store. The elastic cords only lasted a season with our brutal sun. The zip ties a bit longer, but they eventually got brittle and...
After doing some online research she does appear to be some sort of Japanese Bantam cross. She has green/slate legs so maybe crossed with EE? Kind of weird that she would be at a feedstore in the bin with the other chicks. Thank you all for steering me in the right direction:)
Japanese bantam cross; what exactly is that? Sorry to sound so dumb, but I've never heard of one. Is she an egg layer? She's not much smaller than the other chicks; why do you think she's a bantam? Just trying to learn some new information. Thank you.
