We've been raising Marans for a couple years. This year I decided to sell some eggs to offset the feed costs and had a comment from a prospective hatching egg buyer that Marans eggs will lighten up considerably if they are given crushed oyster shell.
Anybody have any knowledge of this?

Our chickens/guineas have 17% layer pellets in a hanging feeder available to them 24/7. That is supplemented with kitchen scraps that includes leftover food, greens, egg shells, etc. and occasionally scratch grains. On better days (without snow or heavy rain) they free range from about 11AM...

I just saw this because I/m searching for a way to keep water from freezing in the coop. I'd like to build one also buy have difficulty finding the aluminum feeder pans.
