Agreed. Keeping it all clean is the best preventative... But I know DE's helped with mites, and the flies (which have been terrible this summer in GA) don't seem to come around when it's around.
I know feed stores sell stuff for cleaning coops and barns and such. I've never needed to use chemicals, though. I just scrape out the poop every morning, keep the pine shavings fresh every week, and air everything out for a few hours a day after egg collection.
Also discovered that sprinkling...
We're only months into backyard chicken-ing, and learning a ton as we go. We bought 3 Golden Comet hens when they were 18 weeks old, and they are daily layers... sometimes two a day each. So, after we thought we had the hang of it, I decided to go to Tractor Supply and buy 4 more for the flock...
We have four 6-week-old Easter Eggers and three older Golden Comet hens. The big girls have 32sqft inside, and the little girls who are still separated in the coop have set up their temporary home in the run-extension, but they have a fenced-in grazing area... So, to answer for each set of...
Update: Boots is out grazing today and full of energy. She was not well at all a couple of days ago... barely moving. We crushed an antibiotic pill in water and used the dropper to get it down. Today, I mixed a half pill in with some egg, and she loved it. She seems to be fine. At least for the...
Thank you. Upon further inspection (or just paying attention to the label on the bag) the shavings are pine, not cedar. My wife had bought them, and I wasn't entirely sure. But, we'll get the oyster shell introduced shortly.
Thank you for the quick advice! They have granite grit in the coop, I believe. Not oyster shell. Hopefully she won't have another poop like that one, but if she does, I'll take a pic. Also, what is the best way to feed them a calcium tablet? I have a hard time getting them to eat the feed they...
As a disclaimer to any dumb statements/questions I may pose, I'll say: We are brand new to keeping chickens. Everything we know has been learned online and/or from a few friends we know who "grew up" with chickens. So, we started with a small flock of only 3 birds. Today marks one full week that...
With the Covid-19 situation ongoing and so much to worry about, we thought we'd at least try to be prepared... Not to mention, we've always wanted chickens. This was as good of an excuse as any. I got together a bunch of my old barn wood and built a coop, and brought home our new family members...
