Dislocated v. Broken leg in 4-week old Marans chick

He is 5 weeks old. It is definitly not spraddle leg. It is an injury. I think that in the excitment of catching the duck, a chicken stepped on him, raking his back with its nails and squishing it which injured his leg. Unfortunately I cannot take him to the vet. Danielle

Dislocated v. Broken leg in 4-week old Marans chick

yesterday I was catching a duck and suddenly a chick flapped past me peeping like mad. I saw he was dragging his left leg so I caught him. As I held him, I could feel blood pulsing against my hand from a wound on his back. I got him upstairs, and dumped a lot of cornstarch on his back to clot...

Pullet cannot walk - found her lying on her back tonight!

Thanks for the replies folks. We ended up humanly euthenizing her tonight. I spoke to the state poultry vet today about her. He thought that Mareks was a possibility, even though she wasn't paralyzed as much as had little strength or control over her legs. Based on my description of her...

Pullet cannot walk - found her lying on her back tonight!

Hi All - I am new here and fairly new to chickens. I have a 34 week old BLW pullet who has been limping for over a week. We noticed that she was flapping her wings when she walked last Saturday (9 days ago). That night we moved the chickens to their new coop, and they were locked in for...

Moving chickens to a new home

Thanks all! They are now coming back to their new coop reliably. Even if the one "ground layer" I have still goes back to her old spot BEHIND the old coop to lay her eggs!!! I figure that should stop after a few snowy days. . Thanks again! Danielle in Utah

Moving chickens to a new home

Thanks for the replies... A loafing shed is a 3-sided shelter for pastured animals. Basically, it is a 12 x 24 barn with no front wall/doors. So in the shed they are protected from rain and snow, but wind and driven wet/snow might be able to reach them. The shed I moved them into has a...

Moving chickens to a new home

Hi All, I hope this is the right area to post this... I had my chickens all summer in a dog run inside a loafing shed (to protect from rain, etc). I moved them into a shed attached to the house for the winter. It will ne much warmer and I can more easily feed, water, gather eggs, etc. with...

    Introduction: Danielle from Utah

Hi All, I just joined the forum. I have a small flock of chickens and find myself fairly smitten with the critters. I have a mixed flock of feed store special orders (so they are supposed to be pure... not likely! LOL) which were 3 cuckoo Marans and 3 BLR Wyandottes. All pullets. Reality...
