We don't have a business by any means, but my five year old and I sell plants, eggs and baby chicks, usually just at garage sales. It was a lot of work to set up, especially if technically challenged, but I created our own website. It's still in the works, but it explains everything we do here...
My problem is the eggs are all several days apart. When the first eggs hatched, I had to take them out because the next one's wouldn't hatch until 4 days later.
Out of 31 total eggs, 5 we're rotten, 11 hatched and 1 died during hatching. The remaining eggs had a hatch date of yesterday and only...
I agree. I have my incubator outside in my garage. I live in Florida where it is 87 degrees out right now and super humid, so I think it wasn't as drastic when I opened the lid as it would be inside.
One died last night before it hatched. :( It pecked a good amount of egg out when I went to bed. Overnight, too much air got in. The humidity was 40% when I woke up and the egg still wasnt open. I waited most the day, but it didn't move or anything. I peeled the shell off, the membrane was...
My neighbor wormed her chickens and had 4 days worth of eggs she was going to toss. We took all 32 of them and put them in the incubator.
I remove the chicks once theyre dry, bit they're 4 days apart, which means I have lifted the lid several times during that 3 hour DO NOT DISTURB period.
Today...

Thanks, that was the answer I was looking for...from a fish expert.
I am not worried about the chickens falling in the water. I never thought of parasites, but I'm not too concerned about it.
Another tip: Instead of putting the pupa into a container, turn the container upside down, place it in your beetle bin and put the pupa on it. That way, when the pupa's morph into beetles, they will just crawl off and land into your beetle bin...one less thing to sort...
We have just extended our chicken pen so that our 15 chickens have access down to our 1/4 acre pond. I remember hearing once that you should be careful placing chickens next to a pond because the nitrogen in their waste can kill off your fish. Any thoughts on this? It is a fairly large pond...
Hey Matt,
There's no real answer...I guess it depends on what you are using them for. I raise my mealies as snacks for my chickens and goldfish. I'm okay with my mealworms eatting chick starter. Mine do every once in awhile, (usually just when we have new chicks and I have starter nearby). I'm...
