I'm not in Oregon - but across the river in Vancouver,Washington. I posted on the Washington thread and someone suggested that I try Oregon. I am looking for fertile eggs - preferably close to hatching - for my broody hen. Craigslist was a bust and I don't live near any farmers. Most of us that...
I have just got enough posts - I think - to be able to reach out to others in my area. I live in Vancouver and am looking for some fertile eggs - preferably close to hatching that I could purchase and put under my broody hen. Any suggestions? I have looked at Craiglist but nothing there. Live in...
I have a similar problem: I have 3 hens about 1 year old - 2 are laying - they all make that loud squawking noise when they lay an egg - but one ISN'T laying; she just makes noise as if she does. They are in an enclosed coop - so it's not like she is hiding them anywhere.
any eggs yet? I got three chicks at the same time from the same store from the same bin. Only one is laying. They are all about 30 weeks old (we have had them for 29 weeks and I assume they were about 1 week old when we bought them). They are in an enclosed chicken run, so eggs are not being...
My girls are just over 6 months old. I have three of them and only 1 is laying - and even she is sporadic; I get an egg every other day. I have read plenty of articles about hens stopping - but not too many articles about why they don't start.
I have 4 young hens - they were 6 months old end of September. One has been laying since she was 5 months old - nothing from the other two. Is this normal?
OK - you will be able to tell I am new at this....but do hens know where to lay eggs? I have a coop (with a nesting box) which they never use. They always stay outside in the run; maybe because it is summer, I don't know. But will they go inside to lay eggs or will they just lay them anywhere?
Did you ever do any research on this? I have been feeding my chicks the starter food, too - and they are now 4 months old. I hate to think that I have been creating fat hens...
I'm finding the comments quite interesting. I have 10 week old chickens - and they have 2 roosts inside their coop; one is only 4-5 inches off the floor and the other is about 3 feet up (too high right now - hopefully they will grow into it). My question is: they have a spot inside the coop, yet...
how high was your roost off the ground? I have a roost that is about 3 feet off the ground. my girls are about 10 weeks old. I placed them on the roost last night, but they couldn't/wouldn't get down this morning.
Good to know. It's rather intimidating reading all the 'do' and 'don't' lists. I mean - we sometimes eat apple seeds (not intentionally) and also stone fruit - but that's bad for chickens? I don't get it....so they have been eating their boring chicken feed. Figured that was safe.
