Hi! I’m relocating to outside of Albany from the PNW as soon as it’s safer to do so. Had a small in town flock of 20 mixed colors, gorgeous hens collected over 5 years from several different farms in the PNW. Sad to let them go but they’ll go to a great farm and once I’m settled I’ll be looking...
Hi, all,
I just wanted to share some good news and get your opinion on these wounds. Last Wednesday we had a freak thunderstorm and a neighbors dog got into the chicken run (in the back third of my fully fenced back yard). At this point I wonder if someone tossed it over the fence - it’s about...
Thanks everyone’s she’s still hanging on notbgetting worse but not getting better. She’s got an isolation cage in view of her flock. I’m not optimistic - she was always a little funny - but I still want to give her chances.
Thanks so much!
I’m actually relieved if it’s Marek’s cropping up (again) - I know how to deal with that, and the probable reason is that the seller was lying and the birds he sold me (including the one that passed and the one that is currently sick) were not vaccinated.
The rest of my birds...
Hi, all,
I have a mixed age backyard layer flock and I’m based in Oregon. We just had two out-of-season heat waves — 3+ days in a row of over 100F followed by some very temperate to cool days and nights (70/50F) — about a month apart and I noticed drops in egg production the first round (went...
Yay! Update on the chicks:
12 shipped, 12 developed.
6 out of 6 OE hatched. All are alive and healthy, big and fat. 4 blues and 2 black, one with puffy cheeks.
4 out of 6 BCM hatched. I assisted with two. One had a twisted femur and maybe some other internal issues and didn’t make it past day...
All 10 babies under mom. 2 are a little iffy (Shipped eggs, incubated w incubator, hatched Thursday, Friday, and 2 late bloomers Saturday & introduced under her yesterday am and the last 2 today). 1st time mom doing great.
They have a vitamin mash in the little dish (Scratch and peck chick feed...
And I just stuck 8 under a broody hen! Success!
One has a gimpy leg and one last one is still pipped but not anything more. I think the slightly low temps might have affected chick development
So far 9 have hatched!
6 OEs all unassisted.
3 BCM hatched (slight assists on 2, both were mostly unzipped but air cells were smaller so they attempted to unzip too close to the end of the egg) + 1 pipped and actively unzipping now ..
1 BCM quit partway and 1 BCM quit early or never...
5 am, day 21. 4 hatched so far (OEs), 1 BCM is unzipping and 2 more BCM are pipped. (Out of a dozen shipped from WA to OR) — Will take pics in a little bit!
Will attempt to slip them under a broody hen tonight!
Good luck! I had a batch of shipped eggs take 10+ days to get here and I wasn’t hopeful but I set them anyway, 3 hatched, 2 made it, and 1 was a girl. I have a lone silkie living happily in my LF flock so hopefully it will all work out
Thanks! And me too - I need to clean out & spray down the extra coop and baby chick-proof it, move the broody into it, and clean out the backup rabbit cage / brooder. for if mama doesn’t adopt the babies ... most of the hatching action should take place tomorrow and Saturday :) fingers crossed...
I have a pip! Today is day 20, hatching should begin in earnest tomorrow!
Also I heard the chickie peeping in there and the egg rocked a little bit when I cooed at the incubator.
And one of my hens went broody this week, here’s hoping to having her take care of the babies!
Happy almost-Friday!
