Hi, all,

I just wanted to share some good news and get your opinion on these wounds. Last Wednesday we had a freak thunderstorm and a neighbors dog got into the chicken run (in the back third of my fully fenced back yard). At this point I wonder if someone tossed it over the fence - it’s about Norwich terrier sized and can’t have gotten under anywhere. Guess we are all lucky it wasn’t a bigger dog!

Anyway I found them probably within an hour. Got the dog back to it’s owner. Pulled two badly mauled hens inside in dark boxes, cleaned those wounds and slathered with triple antibiotic ointment. Made sure two other birds with wounds had their wounds cleaned and slathered with ointment once they went to bed. Spent way too much money taking the two that were really bad to the emergency vet from midnight to 5 am that night. Went to work, picked them up late afternoon.

One was clearly in pain and suffering and getting worse so I put her down later that night. The other, the white langshan shown here, seems to be on the mend. She has several puncture wounds and largish openings that are scabbing over. She is getting a derm-x ointment (promotes healing and prevents bacterial infection) and clavamox orally (I crush the pill then mix with hard boiled egg and she gobbles it down).

I noticed that some of the area near her back seemed to redden up but then fade after a day. Now the lower wounds are going through that same cycle and an area a little to the right and below the wound at the base of her tail is getting redder. Today is Sunday so about 3.5 d after the attack and the vet visit. I’ll wait to see if it fades by tonight - I think it’s bruising and injured skin going through the healing process but I wanted to get y’all a opinion about what to watch out for infection vs skin bruising and healing.

She’s generally behaving normally. Poops range from semi solid to watery depending on how soon after the clavamox. got squash last night and that helped firm up the poops. Drinking well. Inside in a dog crate. Preening and walking ok.

What do you think? Any experience?

I'm sorry for your losses :hugs

It's good that you were able to seek vet care.
To me, the wound looks o.k., the lighting is a bit low, but nothing obvious stands out. It will take some time for her to heal.

I believe that @coach723 has a link to how a wound heals, it's pretty interesting, if she can share that along with her thoughts/opinion, it would be appreciated.

It looks pretty good to me also, nothing obviously amiss. Unfortunately my link is no longer working :hit, which really stinks as it had some really good pictures. How it looks and how it smells are both important. I did save 3 pic's separately , so here they are, they are all very normal healing:
