So I picked up some chicks in a seedy part of town...

They turned out very beautiful! I'm so glad you found them and gave them a chance!

OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

I always wanted to go to one of the shows or swaps. They sound like fun! What are they like? I think I have the DH convinced to going to the Nationals this November. I wanted to go last year, but with the AI scare....well...

Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

I have good news Oz is fine. I wrote a private message to his mom on Facebook explaining how we were concerned for him. She said he is fine. Very busy and his wife is in the US with him right now. Hopefully she doesn't think I'm creepy for reaching out since she has NO idea who I am. I...

    Hen's skin torn by rooster

Of course this would happen to my favorite hen. I have noticed recently that a couple of my hens are missing back feathers from my rooster being amorous. I ordered several hen saddles and started to make plans for removing his spurs. The saddles are due to arrive this Thursday ( 2 days from...

I prefer Meyer Hatchery in Polk, OH. I have always received healthy, beautiful birds from them.

New guy with a question about small coops

4'x6' will be PLENTY big enough for just a couple fuzzy butts! Sounds like a great idea and I'm sure your girls will be very happy with that. Plus you get the added satisfaction every time you look at the coop knowing you built it yourself! BYC is a great site. I have only had my chickens...

New guy with a question about small coops

Hello! Welcome to BYC! I'm concerned about using this for a coop, even for only 2. The dimensions of the 'coop' part are only approx 1.5'x2'. That's only around 3 sq ft of space for both your birds to share. 4 sq ft per bird minimum is what is suggested. Also, chickens really should be...

OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

My Welsummer laid her first egg today. Right in the middle of the coop. My DH was in there giving them some scratch and I think he startled her. She squatted as soon as he came and just laid it. LOL Poor girl was probably a bit surprised!

I suspect this is fake. Any thoughts?

I have one, and she is stunning. Not the crazy brightness of the original picture, but still really pretty. She came from Meyer's Hatchery in Ohio. Minimums are only 3 chicks, if you order them to be delivered after March I think. And the 3 can be an assortment of breeds, not just 3 of one kind...

I have a white Silkie hen that LOVES muddy rain puddles. She is currently brown. Silly girl. She has a perfectly dry section of the run but she just HAS to play in the mud.

Chickens can live up to around 10 years old, so 5 is middle aged. :)

Is it spring yet? I'm over winter already and it hasn't even started!

Hello fellow Ohioans! I'm so glad it is supposed to be warm this weekend. I need to finish winterizing. When the water froze last week, I had to get my poor DH out of bed to run the electrical cords out to run the water heaters. All we really have left to do now is put up plastic on the run. We...
