Brooder Box- incandescent vs heat light

Thank you thank you! I was wondering what the long bar was. I had suspected it might be a heater, but I couldn’t find a match for this brooder online. Also, good to know about the wafer. I guess I better get testing things out. I love that whenever I come here with a question there is someone...

Brooder Box- incandescent vs heat light

Hello! I found this neat brooder box at an estate sale last weekend. I am planning to put my hatch, coming in a few days, in this box to grow out. I am wondering if anyone around here has seen this set up before, and if they could tell me the style of light I will need to use to provide warmth...

    Buff Orpington Rant thread!

I agree with this! I try to recommend great breeds with great eggs to friends. They say, "No, those won't work i want to look at pretty chickens" And then they go buy a bunch of buff orps at TSC. 🤦🏼‍♀️ I will not ever understand the hype.

    Hatching With Hatch Bags

I had a great hatch with the baskets! My best advice for anyone wanting to hatch with bags is: use a basket with it! no tangled chicks amd lots of room for them to move. Make sure the bag is secured. Active little chicks will find a way out of their baskets if you let them.

    Hatching With Hatch Bags

Some overzealous chicks started pipping early while in the turner. I got them sorted and in baskets. It was a classic case of hurry up and wait! 🤪 I think the baskets will work much better than the bags. We will all find out together!

    Hatching With Hatch Bags

I think its similar. I have decided to switch to a basket inside the hatch bag to separate eggs during hatch.

    Hatching With Hatch Bags

I haven't decided yet, but I am leaning towards no. I did end up having to help a "glued" chick who was stuck and couldn't move. I may order a few different kinds of bags and play around more with egg placement and bag placement to see if there is a way to make the process more foolproof. I...

    Hatching With Hatch Bags

Here is an example of the most common problem with these hatching bags. This may be just due to the kind/size of bag I am using. These bags were labeled for 10-12 eggs, and I only felt comfortable putting 3-5 eggs in each. They looked pretty small! Perhaps more eggs stretches the bag out more...

    Hatching With Hatch Bags

Update: I have had to open my incubator a few times to untangle/untwist hatching bags. I have had issues with chicks getting stuck on their backs and somehow twisting the bags tightly around themselves (and others) while attempting to get upright. I am hoping opening the 'bator hasn't shrink...
