    Desperate for sloped run ideas!!!

I also laid the 1/4 galvanized hardware cloth across the opening and resting on the 2x4s so nothing can dig from underneath. I used 48 inch sections for the framing as well.

    Desperate for sloped run ideas!!!

Yes to the bead of contractor cement. Be careful which way you place the blocks. I did solid sides facing out, holes facing up. Put a paver on top of that and then the bead of adhesive cement and then the 2x4s. Be very sure everything is level and squared. We missed on the squared part by a bit...

Topic of the Week - Biosecurity, Quarantine and Infectious Disease Management

Human visitors do not get past the fence to the back yard. I do have plastic overshoes if someone needs to go in there. I have special shoes and boots that I wear in by the chickens. I also have a jacket specifically for going to the chickens and working in the run. I do not reuse egg...

Comment by 'dvcrztb' in article 'Your Backyard Egg Sales (Marketing and Branding)'

Reusing egg cartons is not in keeping with bio security measures. Any germs that were in those cartons are now on your eggs.

    Anyone use Koop Clean?

A Dropping board is a board or something you can put under the roost to catch the overnight droppings. It should be smooth and wide enough to catch all the droppings. In the AM, scrape it off with a plaster/ putty knife into a bucket. If you have a square coop, there are trays that are put under...

    Anyone use Koop Clean?

LOVE KOOP CLEAN and not affiliatd in any way. I first saw it on The Chicken Chick's Blog and then in a few magazines. I mentioned it to my not so local feed store and they got it in for me. I mentioned it at a chicken workshop sponsored by the feed store and a bunch of people went over and got...

What are the MUST HAVE items for backyard chicken enthusiasts?

1/4 inch hardwre cloth attached with washers and screws to the framing of your run and sand for the floor. I have the hardware cloth under the sand. This makes it predator proof. If you opt for corrugated poly roofing, don't get the clear as it makes it too hot inside. in the winter when...

    Do chickens get colds? UPDATE

Add some Apple Cider Vinegar = ACV to their drinking water. I have a 5 gal bucket and put a splash in. 1 tablespoon to a gal is fine. I take ACV myself when I feel a cold coming on and it is gone. I get Braggs at Whole Foods because it has the fermenting goodies in it and is not filtered like...

Soy /Corn / GMO free feeds?

The nearest feed store to me is Mike's Feed Store and they carry Purina. Because of my breast cancer being soy responsive, I need soy free feed for my backyard flock. The corn free is not as important, but I do feel very strongly about NON- GMO in my diet as well as my chickens. When is Purina...

HELP! Fly Problem - Deep Litter Method

I have sand in the run. It drains fast and is super easy to clean the poop. Wet poop attracts flies. Dry poop doesn't.

HELP! Fly Problem - Deep Litter Method

Please do not use DE. It is dangerous to your and the chickens' respiratory systems. It does nothing for flies. I am using fly lure/traps from Home Depot, but you can find them at many places. They consist of a plastic bag with a yellow stopper. Inside is a fly sex lure. You pull the plug up to...

New Egg New to New Jersey!

I am a little concerned that my EE/Americauna might be a roo. I am seeing what I think may be saddle feathers. Will try to get a pic of the bird in question up tomorrow. They have gone to bed already and the video I took today disappeared. Mysteries of life. Do you have a pic of an EE roo?
