My two Barred Plymouth Rocks are the sweetest birds in my flock. One takes every possible opportunity to sit in my lap, and will fall asleep there if I let her. Only one has started laying so far - with the amount of light we're getting, I expect the other will wait until spring - but she lays...
How has there been a conversation about brains and aliens without the Billy and Mandy cartoon being mentioned? I'm going to have the song stuck in my head for the next few days now. Skip to around 1:18 for the song to start.

Aww man, Halloween is my favorite! How about you give me all your extra Halloween, I'll gladly take care of it. You can have my spare Easter, spring in general has a grudge against me. How's that sound? (What do you mean, that's not how it works?)
The local pizza parlor makes a pickle pizza. It's kind of like a meatless hamburger, except with more pizza. I think it's delicious, my family thinks it's delicious, everyone else seems to think that we're aliens. I honestly didn't know that pickle wasn't a ubiquitous pizza flavor until other...

Hmm, perhaps, but that seems like drastic measures to me. For now, I bought a dozen eggs from the people up the street, then firmly told the birds that all the money I spend on eggs from other chickens is money I could be spending on treats for them.
If they're still not laying once...
Alright, people, how do you keep from going crazy during the wait? My birds are 19 weeks old. I hadn't seen any signs of laying until one started practicing her egg song today. Now I know I'm going to be running over to check for eggs every five minutes. (With my luck, I'll be doing so for the...
Thanks everyone! The consensus is to keep an eye on Eris, so that's what I'll do. When more pictures get taken this weekend I'll be sure to get a good shot of the saddle feathers... as well as camera-shy Cordelia.
Cordelia
Eris
Franziska
Faraday
Skaði
Terezi
Cordy and Eris are Speckled Sussex, 'Ziska and Faraday are Barred Rocks, Skaði and Tez are Silver-Laced Wyandottes.
My birds are six weeks old, feed store/hatchery stock, and supposedly (hopefully!) all girls. There haven't been any neon flashing ROOSTER! signs, but I'm not really sure what I'm looking for and rather than drive myself crazy I figured I'd ask the experts. Taking the pictures was an adventure -...
Try hanging an old CD on a string - chickens love to peck at shiny things. Or try a chicken treat ball - whenever I put out treats in the ball my chickens are just as interested in the bell as they are in the food!
Have any of your chickens been hanging out on the ladder? You might want to put some kind of netting on if they haven't. At 4 1/2 weeks the rungs are too big to be comfortable for my girls, although I'm not sure if that would be the case at 6 weeks.
It's torture, though, to watch them all...

What sort of treats should i give them apart from mealworms? what are you using?
I've tried grapes, but for some reason my birds ignored 'em, which is weird because it seems from browsing the forum like everyone else's chickens LOVE grapes. I've given them beet greens, lettuce...
The way to a chicken's heart is through their stomach! Bring treats!
No, really - even if all you have is a handful of their regular feed, if you bring them some kind of food every time you drop by, they'll quickly learn that the evil scary death hand is actually the wonderful hand that brings...
