    Two Broody Buffs

Two of my Buffs have become broody. I have removed them from their normal coop and placed the two of them on 10 fertilized eggs each in a small coop (4'x4'.) My question is will the two mother hens coexist with their broods once they have hatched or should the two hens be separated with their...

    Broody Buffs

Thanks! They have been in the new coop all night. I think I'll keep it dark in there for today and see if they take to the new nests.

    Broody Buffs

Two of my Buff Orpingtons have become broody and I would like them to sit and hatch some chicks. I have removed them from their flock and placed them in a separate coop with fertilized eggs that I have been given. My question is: Is their instinct strong enough so that they adapt to their new...

    Switching feed

Yeah, it's pretty cool! I was surprised by the early age of leghorns. I knew they mature quickly as breeds go but didn't expect them to lay so soon. My black sex links and barred rocks went 28 weeks before we were able to plate an egg! I'll try mixing the feed. I'm trying to avoid buying...

    Switching feed

My two leghorns (17wks old) have started to lay. The 10 others (13 week old Araucanas and Buff Orps) have not. Can I switch to all layer pellets at this point or should I continue the grower feed? Also, the eggs from the leghorns are very small. Will they increase in size as they get older?

    Changing flocks

Thanks! I'll get that done this weekend. The 5wk olds are still on chick starter while the leghorns are on grower pellets. Should I combine the two once they are all together?

    Changing flocks

I am ready to take the 6 old girls out of the large coop and into another. I plan to put two 9 week old white leghorn pullets with 6 Buff Orpingtons and 6 Ameraucanas (all of which are 5 weeks old) into the large coop (12'x8'). Any suggestions for how I should go about introducing the leghorns...

    Very tired chicken

Thanks for the help. I ended up giving her a warm bath and checked her vent for a stuck egg - could not feel one. I put her back in the coop that evening and the next day she was a little more alert. As each day passed I noticed her acting more normal. Today she laid her first egg since the...

    Very tired chicken

One of my year old black sex-links is constantly falling asleep. She will walk sometimes with her eyes closed then wake up. Looks like she is exhausted. I have 10 sqft/bird for the coop and they have a 20' x 30' pen. They have been fed layer plus pellets (18% protien). Comb looks good not...

    2 layers 1 roo?

I thought I would add a few white egg layers to the flock. Should one of them be named Foghorn??!

    Ground Cover

Thanks for the input! I'll try different stuff and see what works and report back.

    Ground Cover

I'm looking for a quick growing ground cover for our pen approx 30'x20'. My ladies were moved into a new pen this spring before the existing grass even had a chance to turn green. Now the pen is a wasteland of dirt and straw that I have added. I am planning on fencing in our back yard so they...

CMOM - What did you end up doing. I will be in a similar situation later this year. Figured I should prepare myself.
