i was wondering how your fence came out and if your chicken are going over it. I have been wanting to know the answer to the same question you had. We were planning to put up a tall fence to keep our chicken in the yard and out of the flower bed, but I had heard chickens will not g over a...
We let our flock out to free range year round. We live in the foot hills of western North Carolina. We do have winters and snow and ice storms. We get down to low teens in the winter. The chickens love to get out even when it's cold. They do not seem to like to walk in the snow though and all...
I have just recently learned about mites. My two big Black Australorps went broody together in the same nest box. They didn't come out frequently enough to take dust baths and got mites.....lots of mites. This is a lengthy post with all the steps I took but it worked well for me. The following...
So far I have no experience with the chicks pecking the mama, however, I do have experience with chicks pecking other chicks and adults pecking adults. An old timer told me to put Vics Salve on the pecked areas as it tastes bad to them and will deter them from further pecking. It has worked well...

Thanks so much Jenn. That's great to know. I just knew it was a change and that my other BOs were still nice and red. I am relieved my happy little chicken is alright! Whooh!
I just noticed one of my BO hens has faded earlobes. The skin is intact and she doesn't seem bothered/pained when I touch her earlobes. She is very active, laying and seems to be very healthy. The rest of the fleshy parts of her head are red. Should I be concerned or treating for something?

I would choose this over mineral oil. Mineral oil comes from petroleum and I believe the reason the eggs no longer look shiny after a day or two is because the oil absorbed...
I am totally new at all this too. I get that when it is dry you haven't had to do anything with the poo because the chickens covered it up in the sand . But when it is wet out and you have to rake it out what do you do with it...Can you still add it to your compost with all the sand stuck to...
