    Bye chickies!

Quote: We live in a forested area in Oregon: raccoons, foxes and bobcats who are hunting during the day as the coyotes take over at night. really I have tried this for years and I cannot sit next to them all day. One bob cat waited next to the coop until I came back with the dogs and he...

    Bye chickies!

There have been years that I didn't give up but I finally decided to put their interest first. I didn't want them to be afraid so often. Of course it breaks my heart to give them up, especially the Australorp hen, who always follows me around, talking to me. They will have a great home, safe...

    Bye chickies!

The predators won the war. I have covered the coop, only let them out a few hours a day. Last week a hawk scared the %#$% out of them and flew 1 ft over their wire roof. Next day something heavy jumped on their roof, causing another upset. The dogs immediately chased "it" into the forest. Never...

    Wild friends

During free range times, my chickens mingle with a few wild turkeys. Will that affect their health, regarding parasites? It is actually cute. When the turkeys see me throwing scratch, they come running.

    Who will guard the flock?

No thanks, I won't kill native wild life since I have invaded their territory.

will a fox eat a kitten?

Why would it be creepy if foxes kill cats? They will not hurt you. It's the responsibility of the cat owner to keep the cats safe (=inside). If I let my dogs roam the way cats are allowed to roam free, I'd be in serious trouble with animal control. We all have invaded the wild animals'...

will a fox eat a kitten?

If a wild fox catches a kitten, most likely it's a feral kitten. Pet kittens are generally off limits to foxes since they are kept safe. That fox did a good job in reducing the invasive feral cats. They do a tremendous amount of damage. I don't understand why it seems perfectly normal to kill...

    Who will guard the flock?

Two days after my rooster vanished, the bob cat female returned for more in broad day light when I was outside watching her. She waited until I came back with the dogs and then calmly walked off into the woods. Raccoons are not shy either during the day and they are not rabid. Everyone has...

    Who will guard the flock?

Thanks everybody. I'll guess they have to spend more time in their run when I am not outside .

    Who will guard the flock?

Is it true that a gander (male goose) is able to protect a chicken flock against bob cats and raccoons? PLease share your ideas. We live in bob cat / raccoon country and it is so scary to let the chickies out.

    No eggs

The 3 older hens are one and a half years old and the 3 pullets are 5 months old and laying a little egg here and there. They are molting and to top it off, they found themselves rooming in with a rooster one morning a few weeks ago;). Guess, I'll wait until they feel everything is back to...

What to do with this hen?

That's the kindest thing to do. Good luck with the fall chicks. She'll keep them nice and warm. Is she protected from predators? I too thought that one of the hens had found this brilliant hidden spot but she was taken by a raccoon one night, including the eggs.
