    Mysterious Chicken Death

So I came out this morning to my chickens and one had died. I couldn't believe it and I was so scared when I saw her laying under the raised coop and not moving. It was so unexpected. I hadn't noticed any weird behavior earlier, we had been getting eggs from her the last few days and I didn't...

    Questions about hens going broody

Alright cool, great to know. I'm excited to start getting eggs from my Sussex again (hopefully any day now...)

    Questions about hens going broody

Hi, so I'm pretty new to chickens and have only had mine for about a year. I somehow can't find an answer to this: how long does a given chicken typically go broody for? Is it pretty permanent and they won't stop after they start? Are there any good ways to "break" the broodiness and if so, how...

    Anything wrong?

I was thinking that she had just gone a little broody but I wasn't really sure. It's possible I was reading into the other symptoms too much but I just want to keep a really close eye on her and observe her very closely. This is my first time having chickens and I've only had them for less than...

    Anything wrong?

Update and more info: She lives with four other hens, no roosters. She is about 10 months old. We feed her just layer crumble and kitchen scraps though we were without crumble for a day or so and couldn't get to the store so we just fed them a bunch of fruit and veggies and now they're back on...

    Anything wrong?

So one of my hens is being antisocial, not sleeping with the others on their roosting bar and prefers instead to just sit in her nesting box. This is two nights in a row. Last night she seemed maybe kind of slow and lethargic but I couldn't really tell if it was just cuz it was dark or if it was...

Need to lock the chickens up at night?

Ooh that dig-proof fencing on the ground is a great idea. I'll definitely use that. So you think if I make sure it's super predator-proofed I'll be okay with not locking the inside doors at night?

Need to lock the chickens up at night?

So I'm building a chicken coop/covered run at my school and its going to be managed completely by volunteers since I'm graduating this year. I'm going to have a coop and an attached covered run and I obviously want them to sleep in the coop every night. I don't think I'll have trouble training...

    Need 2 ramps?

I'm building a coop/covered run for about 2 dozen chickens and I'm wondering if there's any necessity for more than one ramp from the coop into the covered run. Is one ramp sufficient?

Automatic re-filling feeder and waterer designs?

Just went to the site and it looks like a pretty great waterer. My one question is can you hook up a hose to it? LIke will the plastic tubing fit onto the end of a hose?

Least work-intensive ground cover for a run?

In my coop at home, we just have gravel and it works fine, the chicken poop kind of just dries/decays. But we have just 5 hens and are fine with giving it a lot of attention. I am trying to get a small flock going at my school so I'm wondering what to put on the ground. I haven't decided where...

Do chickens need a lot of sun?

I'm trying to get a small flock going at my school (I already have 5 at home) and I'm trying to choose the location for the run/coop. I found a good location but it is pretty much shady the entire day. Will chickens be unhappy/unhealthy in this environment?

Automatic re-filling feeder and waterer designs?

So I'm trying to get a small flock going at my school, but I'm going to be gone after this year. I want the flock to be maintained after I leave so I'm looking for some feeders and waterers that will kind of re-fill themselves just by gravity or whatever. Anything that requires minimal...

    Laying in the Wrong Places

When I let them out of the coop this morning they investigated the easter eggs and started pecking at them probably because they're shiny and bright, but I tried to shoo them away and discourage them from doing so. we'll see what happens next!

    Laying in the Wrong Places

Wow, I have no idea how I missed your original response. Lol that is actually ridiculous. Thanks again, I'll make sure to check when I eat the eggs.
