We finally have our little family of ducklings together. The last two arrived today ( replacement cayuga and her traveling companion, a black swedish). Our lonely little survivor is very sweet and gentle with all her younger buddies. It was a very warm day today so I let them out to enjoy the...
Hi June,
I put them out for a bit and they are very happy dabbling in the mud and getting some fresh air :) At times they snuggle and nap in a heap and then they're up and moving around and playing. This is my first time with ducks so would you mind telling me what the signs of chilling...
Hi all,
I have an age mixed group of ducklings from 2 weeks-2 days. It's getting to mid 70's to 80 today no breeze. I have setup a secure sunny, with a bit of shade area, for them to play and get fresh air. Would they be alright for a few hours? So far they seem thrilled to be out...
,
Bless her heart, the poor baby died some time last night. My son came in my room in tears and told me. <sigh> we have had some bad luck with these poor ducks. Thanks for all your advice :) I think she was just beyond my help. She's in duckie heaven now with the other 5 we lost.
Lydia thanks so much for replying.I do not have a clear barrier so she is separated by a board in their brooder, for now. She is sitting directly underneath the heat lamp and not saying a peep. I gave her some save a chick with a dropper like you said just dribbling it and she eventually, albeit...
Ok, so all the ducklings are thriving and happy...except one. I noticed she is the "runt" and everyone seems to be picking on her. I just went to check on them and she was sitting alone and seemed lethargic. I held some food up to her face and she was disinterested. Should I give her some Save a...
I separated them for a while and let the older duckling just get used to their presence in another box. I will reintroduce tomorrow but keep a close eye and see how she does again. Thanks for the tips!
Hello again,
Update on the lone survivor-she's doing great! Has been lonely this past week but everyday we made sure to get her out in the sunshine and let her swim for a bit and forage. Her new family has arrived this morning and it was a slow introduction on neutral ground with no food/drink...
Good idea, Amiga...I didn't think of that. I will probably introduce them on neutral ground outside of the brooder box and away from any food. Make sure the new arrivals as well as Minka are all fed and have had water first. Introduce them with some sort of barrier between them that they are...
Thank you so much for all the advice :) I have done as you said and she responds really well to me feeding her. I will keep you all posted! If I knew how to post pics I would do that too-she's a cutey!
Got in touch with Metzer Farms and they are sending out replacements for next week. Crossing my fingers that the next batch pull through. I have only heard great things about them and many friends recommend them. The woman on the phone suggested that they may have overheated because it was a hot...
I am hoping they replace them or I may just want a refund. I have looked local and contacted some breeders to see if they have any available-I should have done that in the first place I peeked in on her and she's snuggled up to the seagull right now. She perked up and drank some water and ate a...
Hi all,
I had ordered six sexed ducklings from Metzer Farms-2 Cayuga, 2 Welsh, and 2 Khaki. ALL but 1 died on the way here. They shipped Monday and arrived at 5 am at the post office this morning. This was our first go at ducklings and my little boys were SO excited. Imagine the surprise, anger...
Iomine,
I was worried about the same thing. Wondering if I'd just be making extra work for myself... If I do try it I will definitely post pics back here to let everyone know.
