Lash egg-repeat offender but a survivor!

I have a 4yo sapphire gem that survived a horrific raccoon attack (comb ripped off, head trauma, and when I found her she had early flystrike in her vent). She healed from all of this but now during laying season, every month or so she gets very lethargic with diarrhea. I bring her in, wash her...

Concerning eggs from a sapphire gem

Thank you, everyone. I live in MN so I used the crack corn when it was -20 degrees out to help them stay warm. I added it to scratch grains mixed with grubs. They also love blueberries and strawberry tops. I will certainly limit scratch to a little bit every other week. I know the coop is...

Concerning eggs from a sapphire gem

They just get a little handful, mostly cracked corn and fly larva in the morning. Is that really too much? Most of their diet is just pelleted layer feed. Occasionally they’ll get some sunflower seeds and raisins. I’ll certainly stop the scratch if it’s too much.

Concerning eggs from a sapphire gem

Great article! I read one similar trying to figure this all out before asking. My hens basically have a 1,200 sf fenced in back yard to free range all day. Their coop and run is open 24/7 (no predators here!). I have three birds with access to this coop. They’re only in it to lay and sleep. I...

Sapphire Gem egg spots and deformity.

Mine have went from peculiar to concerning.. for weeks I’ve been getting eggs like this from one of my hens. Normal eggs on the left from my other gems.

Concerning eggs from a sapphire gem

I have three wonderful hens, after losing one suddenly at 9 months a few weeks ago. One of my ladies, a large light sapphire gem, has been laying terrible eggs for about 2 months now. Cracks, folds, bulged out, rough texture.. and HUGE. Wanting to know if it’s illness based, or anatomy based...

Sapphire Gem egg spots and deformity.

I have 4 sapphire gems, each slightly darker or lighter than the next so I can tell them apart :) and the eggs change so much! They’re 9 mo, and I just collected this huge strange one today!

    Red laced blue Wyandotte’s 6-7 weeks…any pullets?!

Oh yes, oops! Blue laced red’s! I picked up a few sapphire gems today just in case, but looking today, there is one that definitely has a much larger and redder waddle and comb. Neck feathers also seem less rounded on “him”. Never again will I get straight run!!

    Red laced blue Wyandotte’s 6-7 weeks…any pullets?!

Even with Wyandotte’s? I thought they got redder waddles and combs even as pullets. But time will tell :) so far one has waddles getting bigger while the other two have stayed the same. I’ll update when they’re older.

    Golden Laced Wyandotte Thread!

Hi Kathleen, how early can you tell with the feathers? I have 6 week olds and ppl right away told me cockerels, but I want to know why they think that…

    Red laced blue Wyandotte’s 6-7 weeks…any pullets?!

I will update once I know for sure, I suppose. It’s hard when I can’t seem to find a lot of pics of definite pullets at this age. How can you tell?? What do you see in them that screams roo?

    Red laced blue Wyandotte’s 6-7 weeks…any pullets?!

Well. That’s a huge bummer :/ I’m going to hold out for number 2! They’re in with 3 Easter eggers of the same age (pullets) and the easters have much friendlier dispositions!
