Yes, I love 4-6” of wood chip mulch that you get from tree cutters. In our area there are people that give it away online, or for $150 I can have a dump truck load hauled in.
The birds love to scratch through it and look for bugs. It’s the only thing that I’ld use in an outdoor run in this...
Just wanted to say that we received two dozen beautiful eggs today.
We have recently ordered eggs from a couple of other people.
These were packed far better than either of the other two who claimed to go to extremes to pack well. Both of the other shippers had cracked or broken eggs. No...
We presently have about 30 hens in a coop that could hold almost 100 with a large run with 2”x4” wire fence 6’0” high which is surrounded by woods on a hill.
I have 50 chicks mostly Marans and Whitings which are now 3 weeks old brooding with heating pads in a fenced off area in the coop.
At...

There are other people who sell Isbars other than GFF if you would like to pursue that option for a much lower cost.
I’ve got someone who is sending me some Isbar hatching eggs (that came from GFF) here in the for sale section of this site (BYC).
You can also do internet searches and find...
I use deep litter - leaves in fall and winter, grass clippings in spring and summer on top of my dirt floor. Whenever I begin to smell any odors, I know that I’ve went too long before adding more litter.
I’m more than happy with my floor.
I live in the Charlotte, NC area and the summer sun can be pretty hot here.
I’m building my first two cattle panel coops and was planning on covering them with the 6 mil UV resistant greenhouse plastic sheeting.
For those of you that have these type of coops, how do you keep them cool in the...

I’m obviously not a fly tying expert, but if you do an Internet search on Tom’s Blue Whitings, the main thing that comes up is that they were developed for fly tying.
Just so that I don’t repeat error again, can someone briefly explain to me why they won’t work for fly tying?
You want Whiting True Blue which were developed just for producing tie flying chickens by a professor at NC State. I’ve got eggs in my incubator right now and will have them in the future.
I got mine from Dragonfly Farm in Hillsborough, NC. She breeds for color in her roosters.
+1 on the Fertrells and alfalfa meal.
Many grain mills have a premix similar to Fertrells that they use when they mix their own chicken feed. Fertrells is one of the better quality mixes out there. It is expensive, but a bag goes a long way when you are using 5%.
Fertrells also sells a fish...
