Did you find a solution for solar power to the coop that could keep up with a water heater in winter? I will need to heat (250 watt) a small duck pond by solar power as well as a small pump (45watt). There must be a way if people can power an RV or house.
Have you tried running the water through a tub of pea gravel with plants in it (hostas work nice and come back after winter)? The roots of the plants take care of algae problem.
My sympathies. Truly. I have been through it with a neighborhood dog. As you said, it's gut-wrenching. I started over, but I must say I still miss those particular birds. They each have their own personality. I'm sorry for your loss.
Thanks all for the input. I continue to monitor obviously, but so far so good. Emma continues to brood. FM seems to escort babies when they leave the nest beyond a couple feet perimeter. The drake has actually been good. He comes running if one of the hens squawks and chases off whatever is...

I have 3 Rouen hens and 1 drake. A month ago, roughly, one hen became serious about brooding a nesting of eggs (Emma). Now Emma was never serious about brooding until FM (Ferocious Mama) kept brooding this spring. But FM and her sister were acquired as a young adults and still not friendly with...
I do for the 6mo deep clean when I pull everything out to get what gets away in the regular cleaning. It's old and really dusty. For the regular cleaning I have a poop board with sand and a little diatomaceous earth that I use a kitty litter scoop to clean every day or two. I do wear a mask when...
Sorry, trying to figure how to correctly post...
Double gate in back is cheapy from WalMart, single gate in front even cheaper pallet gate. Half a day pulling apart and putting back together as a gate and digging post holes...
This is my second time owning chickens, but really my first time taking the time to truly enjoy them. Turns out they bring me a great deal of peace! Much needed with all the stressors in life.
I have chickens and ducks. I enjoy just sitting out and watching them on a nice day. I especially enjoy...
