Thanks for your reply! Makes me feel better that both of you think just shell-less. I will keep giver her calcium in the meantime. She was acting pretty normal this evening - eating and roaming around the yard. Yesterday she wouldn’t even eat mealworms! My grandma always told me when an animal...
Thank you both for your replies! That makes me feel better. She’s acting pretty normal now.
Thanks for your reply! I give them Purina Layena which I think has good calcium content? They also have free choice oyster shell, but I switched their litter to straw a few weeks ago and they keep...
Yesterday I noticed my Plymouth Rock acting strange. She's usually very active but was moping around. I looked her over and found something odd stuck to her feathers near her vent (see first picture). I am trying to figure out if this is a lash-egg or just a shell-less egg. Initially I thought...
I recently treated a hen with peritonitis. First I kept her on a broad spectrum antibiotic which went in her water. After she went back to the coop she was fine for a few days then seemed to be backtracking so I got clavamox from my vet and gave it twice daily for another couple weeks. This...
Thanks for your reply - I’ve been trying to place her on the roost when I can, hoping she’ll get the hang of it again. I think I’ll block nesting boxes and try this a few more nights, then, if she still not choosing to roost I will make her a box so she has her own place to sleep without danger...
Thanks for the suggestion. I think it may be best to just let her sleep on the ground but I hadn’t considered creating a designated spot for her. I like that idea - keeps her from getting pooped on and hopefully reduces stress.
Hi there - thanks for your reply! I tried that, but she just sleeps on the floor under the perches. It’s not a big coop so then that puts her in the poop firing line from the other birds who are perching - yuck!
Thanks for your reply! I think bullying is definitely a possible cause. She’s definitely bottom of the pecking order and if she was a school age child I’d probably describe her as sensitive 😉.
Anything you think I can do to help the situation? It’s a smallish coop so I’m not sure how to make...
Hi all - I'm looking for advice about roosting behavior or lack thereof. I have a Brahma hen (a little over a year old) who refuses to perch at night. Instead she mostly sleeps in the nesting box. She perched with the 3 other birds until a couple months ago, then he just stopped. She is not...
Hi everyone,
My 8 month old Brahma has me really worried. Today she started making this almost constant low-volume sighing noise. It seems to be in time with her breathing. This hen has been hiccuping or sneezing for months but because she had no other respiratory symptoms I didn't worry about...
Thank you for your reply! I wondered if that could be the root of the problem. I'm hoping to get two new hens this week. I was supposed to get them last week but panicked about the gape worm. I will keep working on it.
Hi there,
I've had chickens for about a year now so I'm still a novice and am in need of your advice and wisdom! I live in an urban environment and so kept my flock to just 3 hens so far. In the past couple of months I have had a rash of illnesses. First I Iost a hen who was egg-bound, then...
