Ladies losing feathers on head and belly....

They have a fairly large pen area that they get to roam around in. I don't let them range outside of that. Too many neighborhood cats, dogs and hawks. I will try the little treats that you mentioned. Thanks so much for the info!

Ladies losing feathers on head and belly....

Thanks. The first is a skinny bird. She's at the bottom of the pecking order. I have to give her extra food time when I can. Is there any particular food that you recommend that will help plump her up? Right now I give them organic crumble in an auto feeder and they get scratch and veggie scraps.

Ladies losing feathers on head and belly....

I am not sure what is going on with the ladies. They are losing feathers on their head and belly. The are looking kind of scrappy. It's only happening on 4 of the ladies. The other 5 chickens are fine. I have a rooster and he definitely pays attention to these ladies. Does anyone have any...

    Broody hen is stressed

Thank you for your reply. This is my first broody hen so I am not sure how this works. I ordered the eggs from a hatchery so if they come on Friday, can I hold off for a day or two to see if she is sitting again? Or do I need to get an incubator immediately if she isn't sitting on her clutch by...

    Broody hen is stressed

Hi there. I have a broody hen that was sitting nicely on her "dummy" eggs. I finally got a separate hutch for her and I moved her last night. Today she was sitting in another part of the hutch, not on her eggs. I have fertilized eggs arriving on Friday but I am afraid she has abandoned her...

    Winter Question

Thank you for all of the replies. My coop is well ventilated so I am not worried about that. It holds up well in the rain. My friend built my coop and he did a great job. I just wanted to make sure I didn't need to get a heater for them. Thank you again

    Winter Question

Hello there. I live in Encinitas, California (in north San Diego County coastal). It doesn't get terribly cold in the winter but there are times in dips into the 30s at night and early morning. It never really freezes. Is there anything special I need to do for my ladies? I have 6 hens. They...

    Chicken with diarrhea, matted feathers

I have 6 hens...all seem pretty happy, eating well, etc., but one has diarrhea and matted feathers. Most people on the forum say it's parasites and suggest Ivermectin. Ok but I am trying to stay away from chemicals and poisons to treat my chickens. I feed them organic feed, they free range in...

Hen with Diarrhea...poo matted feathers on behind

Thank you for your post. My friend and I dusted the ladies again and I treated their coop. I will get the meds you suggested just in case those nasty little buggers have moved in for the long haul. I will add the whole grains to their food. Right now they get organic feed and daily food scraps...

Hen with Diarrhea...poo matted feathers on behind

I didn't see any. I gave them a good dusting (along with coop) of diatomaceous earth about 2 weeks ago. I also put DE is the areas that they give themselves dust baths. I would think my dog would have picked up the lice too since she shares the yard but she doesn't have lice.

Hen with Diarrhea...poo matted feathers on behind

Hello there, I am new to this forum and new to having urban chickens. I have 6 hens that I have had for a few months. All of them came from the same place. I noticed that over the past couple of days one has diarrhea but I couldn't tell which one. This morning when let them out of their coop to...
