Frozen is a pretty solid theory, pun intended. We've had cold nights and close up the birds pn the early side so it could have been outside for quite a while (and then sat in the fridge for a few days to thaw). I suppose this is easily testable. I'll put an egg in the freezer and report back...
Here's an egg my wife cracked this morning. The yolk came out just like this, all fiber-y and shapeless. Any ideas? Is it safe to eat?
We have 17 birds of many varities, no rooster. Half the birds are one year old, half are almost two. The egg was light brown and on the small side. We've...
I've put 12 six week old birds in with my 8 one-year old hens. I put them in a second coop and run adjacent to the first, then two weeks later removed the fence between them, allowing free access across both coops and runs (and both feeders and waterers).
This plan has worked marvelously to...
Hi! Here's our coop, built for 10 chickens almost entirely out of junk materials. Our design was mostly inspired by the availability of several landscaping timbers we took out of a decommissioned garden bed (for the basic framing), a couple kitchen cabinets (for nesting boxes), and several old...
Our coop opens to a 30x20 run enclosed by a 4' fence. The coop door was accidentally left open last night, and we didn't check on them until this evening, when we discovered what's shown in the photo. The entire bird is still there - beak, head, legs and wings, etc. No blood at all and almost...
Here's a photo timeline of the construction of our coop, happy home to 9 two-month old birds of various breeds. It's an A-frame built out of junk materials, including kitchen cabinets and closet doors. It's a 6x10 coop with an enclosed attached yard. We tried to maximize rain-proofing, which...
I had a chicken die under very similar circumstances, though she was smaller - only about 6 weeks old. We decided the only thing that would enter a secure coop / yard, kill, and leave the body behind would be a snake.
We found ours soon after she was killed and her head was wet - where the...
I've never needed to post here before because there's always answers buried in the forums already, but the answer to this one isn't in here...
Today was the third day our new (and our first ever) flock was in their coop and one has died. The death occurred in the afternoon and I found the hen...
