Yes I'll definitely try to block under the coop because I spent 10 minutes in 40 mph winds chasing them and trying to catch them. It was pretty funny. I caught one, got her in and then realized my coop door doesn't lock on the inside of the coop. Oops. That will need to be fixed too.
Oh well...
The problem is they sleep under the coop and I can't reach them. I will try blocking off under the coop and see where they end up. At least catching them would be easier. :)
So I think catching them and putting them in the coop will be a two person job. I just ran back-and-forth chasing my three chickens for 10 minutes with zero success. They are fast. Guess I'll wait until the husband's home to do it with him.
Mine also don't sleep in the coop but I can't get them once they put themselves to bed because they sleep under it. Should I go out just before dark and put them to bed?
I'll check the height of the roost tomorrow. I went out to measure how far the flat roost is from the wall and found Cashew sleeping in a nesting box. So at least she's figured it out. Lol
Thanks for the compliment. We made our coop over 4th of July and just kinda winged it.
Yes, the other pop hole is open to nothing. We've used it for cleaning out since we can't reach the other side (up against the fence)
The flat bar is our roosting stick, but I don't think they use it. It's...
We have 3. The dimensions are 38" from door to door, 46" wide and 45" tall. That's a rough estimate. I just measured in the dark.
Here is how my girls sleep. You can see them stacked on top of each other. So obviously they don't need much room. Lol again sorry the pic was taken in the dark.
I think when they were really young and they first moved to the run I put them in their coop once. But they seem content sleeping on the ground so I didn't mess with them. However I may try putting them in the coop and closing the door for a few nights and see if that changes their mind. Here's...
@iwiw60 I am in the Portland area. We are a lot milder over here. :) We tried painters plastic a few weeks ago and it was much too flimsy. I will look for greenhouse plastic. Our coop was a hand me down (free is great for me) but it is old and rickety. I believe it is drafty all over...
I am totally new to raising chickens so this may be a silly question, but are chickens extremely social animals? My chickens are 24 weeks and we have raised them since they were chicks. Here is why I ask my question:
1. My EE starts squawking at around 7am. Sounds like a car alarm, rhythmic...
I am in the PNW and this is my first time ever with chickens and we suddenly have colder temps arriving this week. I realize that my chickens are hardy and can handle our mild NW temps. But how can I keep them happy and more importantly healthy!!! We have a small coop and run. We have a...
Here she is running away because she Is skittish.
Also, I should clarify that only one of my 3 is laying but she's laying daily.
Here's one more shot of her.
