    Metacam for hens

A vet friend recommended Meloxicam. Googling it suggested 0.5mg/kg and a study was using 1mg/kg twice daily as their maximum. A friend left their dog's 1.5mg branded stuff so we are going to give it a try on a chook that has been limping after a fox attack (no visible injury). I'd prefer to...

    Chicken in shock(?)

Happy it ended well. I had no idea till reading threads here that shock could have this effect and for so long. Two nights ago, ours suffered a fox attack. Thankfully, my partner got out and scared the fox away very fast. One seems unharmed but seems to exhibit the shock symptoms mentioned here...

    Automatic coop door opener

Yes. I made it so we could close them into an inner coop at night and let them out early as we had a couple of fox cubs investigating. They seem to have lost interest now, as we scared them off every time we saw them. It was just bodged from what I had in the garage. I agree there are better...

    Help: Coccidiosis?

Thanks. Hmm, I hadn't thought about risks from the compost. They'll miss the woodlice :-( With some of the suggestions, e.g. sharp object, it would seem odd (to an ignorant layman like me) that the bleeding ceased 24hrs before death. I doubt a post-mortem by me would reveal much as I'm no...

    Help: Coccidiosis?

A couple of days ago, I discovered the rear end of our Sussex covered in blood and one of the others pecking at it. I was expecting to see a prolapse as it has happened before (pushed back in and treated with hemorrhoid cream, but not recently), possibly since she lays such big eggs, but no. It...

    Introduction: New member

We have only had our hens for about 18 months, a Sussex, Marans and an Australorp. Sadly, the sudden demise of our Sussex is my reason for coming here :-( I confess I was talked into having chickens by my partner but I have been surprised how much they have won me over :-) We love them dearly...
