We have only had our hens for about 18 months, a Sussex, Marans and an Australorp. Sadly, the sudden demise of our Sussex is my reason for coming here :-(
I confess I was talked into having chickens by my partner but I have been surprised how much they have won me over
We love them dearly and are very engaged by their habits and individual characters. Hopefully, we will move out of London to a more rural setting where we can have more. We did plan to keep them for meat and eggs but, I have to say, I don't think we'd have the heart to eat them. Perhaps if we have more when we move. we won't be so sentimental about the others but I think our remaining girls can look forward to retirement
