Thanks to all who gave an opion about lights in the hen house. I'm new to egg layers and enjoy an average 4 or 5 eggs a day from my 6 hens. I read about hens needing 16 hours of light so we have it on a timer. My hens went through a short molting in their 11th month because I gave them protein...
The golfballs didn'twork, but the real eggs did. We realized the space under the nests was big enough for them to lay underneath so put a board there and added a step ramp. My PENNY jumped right into the nest and so did someone else ~2 eggs! We have all brown egg layers so I had planned to paint...
Thanks so much Ohio, we thought of the ceramic egg, but trimming the beak sounds like a great idea if it doesn't interfer with her eating. It's worth a try, I really would rather have her eggs than chicken dinner. Evelyn part time in Ohio
The nest boxes are built of wood with a slanted roof so they won't roost there. The run is 12' square, but low so I have to bend a little. I'll try to send pictures
Thanks Caroline, We have been using hay, but just got straw today so when I clean out the hen house we'll have nice soft straw for them. I will definitely put their eggs in the nest, that sounds logical to me and I sure to the hens. Evelyn in Ft. Myers
My husband made three nice nest boxes for our 6 hens, but they are not using them. They layed on the floor for the people that had them before, so how do I get them to use these nest boxes? New in the hen house
It's a long trip to the feed store and they didn't have oyster shells last time. Thanks for the advice for a good fix of adding oyster shells. Better than having Loverly for chicken dinner. I'll also add lots of hay in their bed for a softer floor. Really hope this works, will let you know. New...
I got 6 hens a year old, coop and run included. They had a week of stress then started molting, I gave them protein cat food and the following week started laying. Problem I found the eggs broken. Watched and found the culprit w'as Loverly'. Now have her in a plastic carton separate from the...
I've caged the hen that is breaking and eating the eggs, is there a way to cure her? I may get some ceramic eggs to put in the cage with her in hopes that it's too hard for her beak and she'll stop breaking eggs, what do you think?
