WHAT IN TARNATION??!!
I was cleaning out the coop this morning and found a bloody lump of something... strange. It was alongside the other droppings under the perch. It looks like maybe an undeveloped egg, but I really can’t tell. There’s quite a bit of what looks like coagulated blood in there...
@TwoCrows Thank you so much for this incredible article!
I'm left with just a couple of questions:
1. Do you give your chicken feed if she has doughy crop? My girl has been blocked up for about a week and she is VERY skinny. I've been treating for impaction but now that I've read your article...
Thank you, but, now she’s back to acting sick again and it’s worse than before.
Her only discernible symptoms are that she hangs out by herself all day, sleeping a lot during the day, and very little food in her crop at night.
All big red flags, but also confusing because she’ll still run...
Here we are a couple days in and leaving out free choice wet mash + chicken Gatorade did the trick.
My Calla is back to her ravenous self!
Thanks for all the good advice @Wyorp Rock !
Amazing thank you so much!
I definitely saw them going to town on the kale at one point, but they did leave half of it, so it certainly could be worse.
What do you think of giving her a wet mash of her normal food in the morning? She usually thinks it’s a treat so she might eat more, and it...
I have a flock of just 2 hens, and I gave them some kale that was on the verge of going bad the other day. It was over 100 degrees that day, and when I came out to check on the girls the next day, I noticed that Calla, my 4 1/2 year old black Australorp was standing off to the side and staring...
Great article! At what age would it be normal to start seeing soft shelled eggs pop up? My Rosie is a 4 yo Buff Orpington and has laid 2 soft shelled eggs this season, though I will say she's endured some changes during our battle to rid the coop of rats, so I'm sure that's a factor as well.
Well hopefully this is good news!
After this incident, that was the last I saw or heard of her waterbelly problems. I didn't think the poor girl would make it to her first birthday, but she nearly made it to the age of four, which is pretty good considering all the poor girl went through...
Wow Jenna, thank you so much. I'm just amazed at how quick and thorough you are.
I'll give all that and some calcium a shot.
I've been keeping my Willow in chicken jail these past few days, but considering letting her out because I have to leave town tomorrow and I won't be back for 11 days...
