We designed the coop so that the girls could roost over the bedding. We then found that if we kept the bedding turned and dry - even in rainy Washington the poop was manageable with our flock of 12 or so birds. Even though cleaning the coop every few months was not very pleasant, my very least...
We designed the chicken coop so that when the birds all roost over the bedding and, if kept dry and turned, even in rainy Washington the poop was not excessive with 12 or so birds. But, cleaning the coop every few months was not my favorite thing.... However, my very least favorite thing was...
We began as a home school project. which quickly became "Mom's Project" after a year or two. To replenish the flock, we even got the neighbors and local 4-H kids involved when who participated in raising chicks. We are winding down now, however, and have had the same 6 hens for the last 4 or 5...
I'm currently getting estimates from Pest Control companies regarding our rat problem. The rats can't get into the coop at night since we've done pretty well with exclusion there. but they are burrowing under the coop into the dirt. Our coop is only 6x8', but it is hard to rake under the coop in...
No, can't bring him home :(
Good idea to give them a bit more TLC. We'll follow-up. Weather here in the northwest has not been too hot. I'm hoping time will work... Thanks.
We currently have a flock of 9 hens, and we've had a beautiful auracana roo for two years. Just recently, (due to neighborhood discontent with his vocalization, among other antics), he found another home on a farm hours away. With the warmer weather and increased daylight, we were getting 4-6...
Thanks, everyone. I hate to be partial because he is beautiful - but we have no use for a rooster. So far he has not crowed. And he runs from most of the hens! So far... no roo behaviors, but no doubt they'll be coming.
We got six new pullets last June, including this Americauna. S/he is rather shy, but bigger now than the others, and has longer, yellower legs. I'm still not good at determining if this is a roo. Can anyone tell?
Thanks!
Thanks for the great post that keeps on giving good info, now two years later! Can't help with the golden eggs, but maybe a good fairy will wave a magic wand for you. :)
Hi, Krista.
I don't think it's mites or lice. And it's only two of the 10 hens. My husband and I looked this eve and did not see anything under the wings. The area above the tail feathers is totally bare with some very small stubs, but mostly red skin. I don't know who is pecking, if there is...
Thank you, Krista. I'll look into the mites and find out how to treat it. We don't have the rooster anymore (gone for over a year, now). I'll check with the feed store on how to treat the mite problem. Do you have any ideas? Is there a home remedy, or will I have to buy some sort of "bug-off"...
Two of my 10 hens (A Black and a Gold Sexlink) have a bald patch just above their tail feathers. At first I thought it was molting, but it has been this way for months with both of them. Can anyone tell me what the trouble might be and how to remedy it? Never seen this in my years of raising...
