Where I'm at was annexed into city. We were rr (rural residential) and were allowed to have horses. Now we are r13000 (single family residence.)
I have thought of a goat or something. But because my yard is full of fruit trees, I have no more room for larger animals.
I let my chickies free...
Ugh. This is frustrating.
So I finally get done with my day at about 10pm.
I go back there to check on them, and 2 are missing already. Look in the corner of the run, and there is a hole chewed through. I hear something, turn, and see something dart across the yard and through the chainlink...
Have n
While I would love to have something more than a .22, the new houses behind me are full of people who love to be nosey. If I fire off something louder than a pellet gun or a subsonic .22, the cops are knocking on my door.
But when I move................
Had some cactus that weeds grew up and smothered them. So I pulled the weeds and gave them to the new chickies. It was grass, and I've seen the other chickies eat it. Boy did they gobble it up :)
Gonna be camping on the back deck. .22 is sighted in, I did stay up most of last night. Checked on them every 45 minutes to an hour. Had my 9mm on my side just INCASE. This is war
Yeah, pretty nice for my neighbors :) we look out for each other on this dead end dirt road :)
I'm still upset...
Well, the blessing in all of this, a neighbors friend had a few he needed to give away. So now I have 4 more. 1 is 3 months, 2 are 5-6 months and one is about a year. The guy had prized roosters that these are the offspring of. One rooster, he paid $500-$600 for. They spoke broken English, and...
Lost over half my flock.
I re did the coop. Put wood along the bottom of the run, put a front on the coop, secured it really well.
My shepherd actually ran into it running and it held up.
Well the night before last, apparently something broke in. Got the twins (barred rocks) got the...
Good luck. I'm a bit jealous :P
Here at my house, I'm surrounded by city. Houses on 1/4 acre or less. I have chickens, fruit trees, and yes blueberries. There's nothing better than a blueberry right off a bush. Of course, the birds know this too haha. It's a race. Last year I got few/none...
Well, its another bowl of cereal for breakfast for me :(
I must have the only chickens that lay eggs at noon haha
Seems if I want eggs early in the AM, I've gotta save them from previous days. Bummer.
I'm not one to get up early 0500, but its be nice to get fresh eggs for breakfast :)
And to add to that, eggs.
I've been getting a steady supply of 1 egg a day from my rir.
So delicious.
And the yolk doesn't break while cooking. With store bought eggs, while doing sunny side up, or just frying them, I would always end up breaking a yolk. With the ones from the backyard...
Once I started growing peas, I couldn't buy store bought frozen ever again. In fact, a friend brought over a bag of peas. I thawed them and they were slimy mushy. But the chickens loved them :)
Very interesting article quote :)
For me, it's not the possible added nutrition. It's what's NOT in...
Lettuce, peas, banana, and a bit of lay pellets. I've been feeding them grow pellets, but now that the one is laying eggs, I tossed in some lay pellets.
Boy do they love bananas and peas lol
Feeling more and more like a homesteader. Just got my first egg yesterday and another one today. Made some scrambled eggs. That was about 9am(?) and now its 1pm. I still feel full.
I also picked some cheddar cauliflower.
The more and more I do, the more I realize that its better than buying...
