Welcome to BYC! I'm from Northern California, but I'm pretty sure that there's a Southern California State Thread somewhere... maybe someone else can send you the list; I'm pretty new to BackYard Chickens, too. This website is very informative (I'm currently doing research for chickens) and has...

    looking for breeds

I'd check locally first, as @K3nzi3 said. But if your search proves unsuccessful, you could order your chickens online. They will ship to you. This is kind of a controversial topic, though, so I'll stop it there.

Rescued dove is lonely Any ideas?

Hmm... well, I know that doves mate for life... if you don't want them to breed (which they will) you could try to get one of the same sex and hope that they "bond." This would probably fill the need for a mate.

    Right bird for me

Ah, this was one of the first birds I looked in to. And then I learned they're illegal to keep here in California. Remember to check your state's restrictions on animals!

I haven't gotten any chickens yet; hoping to do a LOT of research about them before getting any. I want a nice mix of breeds and egg colors for my flock... looking into Easter Eggers (which I learned aren't actually a registered breed) for unique eggs. My parents are open to the idea of...

    Right bird for me

Hello! As you can see from my profile, I have a little parrot myself. He (she? The only way to tell the gender is from a DNA test, so I don't know it) is a green-cheeked conure, with two color mutations– yellow-sided and fancy. I'm also a teenager, so I hope my advice will be relevant. First...
