My hen just started being broody 2 or 3 days ago. I really want to try to hatch eggs this way but I just got chicks from my uncle and will have too many if I allow her to set. I get the eggs from under her everyday but how long will she stay broody?
If this happens again, after putting the vaseline around her vent put on a rubber glove and and stick your fingers in her vent to feel for an egg. Sometimes you can ease the egg out this way.
So sorry for your loss. It's tough to watch. Good Luck
Oh yeah! I'm not a newbie lol. I know how to raise chicks. I had just never heard of anyone feeding chickens fruits, veggies, and scraps (no meat) until I started looking up here. I had always just let them eat the natural things (grass, bugs, etc.) and their laying pellets, oyster shells, and...
I had one about 2 weeks ago like that. I tried all the remedies for an egg bound hen and she never laid an egg, but she was back to normal in about 3 days. I really thought she was going to die but she didn't. The only thing is, she hasn't laid an egg since. So I'm not sure what exactly what was...
I think he will be just fine. I raised up some Brahmas last year and if I am remembering correctly, they developed a little slower than my NHRs. I wouldn't worry yet. I have mutts right now that are 3 1/2 weeks old and there are still some with just wing feathers and a couple body feathers. All...
I just noticed today that one of my New Hampshire Red hen's beak didn't look exactly right. I do not have a picture but I can try to describe it. You know how the beak is supposed to be pointed. Well her beak is squared off looking at the end and has crack down the center. Will this heal up or...
The fruit and veggies haven't hindered their laying one bit. Mine have always laid very large eggs every day, and this hasn't changed at all. I think their favorite is bananas and stale bread. They LOVE bread!!! Oh and lettuce! We don't eat much cabbage so that hasn't been tried, but I hear they...
I have seen many posts up here where people feed their chickens raw potatoes and they love them. That's why I tried it. I am trying to give my girls a variety aside from their layer pellets.
I haven't tried grapes yet. I think mine have a sweet tooth because I tried to feed them some raw potatoes and they didn't seem to interested. I have heard people talk about how much their chickens love broccoli, but mine looked at it and smelled it and left it. They didn't even try to peck at...
