    What is an ISA Brown?

We are absolutely new to chickens and adopted 3 Red Stars from a farm rescue group that works with regional egg farms ready to "retire" their layers. We got them at 16 months, and they are absolutely awesome! They are similar to the ISA browns, I believe (correct me if I'm wrong). They are...

    Recommend a cat litter

We have 7 cats currently (all reject rescues and a couple of foster cats. We use World's Best Cat Litter. Pricey, but it's the only thing we've found that works well. Clumps great and last a while before getting stinky. We previously used Sweat Scoop, but we noticed that it's stinky during...

    Pet lovers, help me please!

I'm so sorry! I can't imagine. I hope you took the trap with you and trashed it. At the very least you may be able to find out whose trap it is and confront them. Traps should be checked daily to prevent unnecessary suffering. Clearly this person doesn't care about anybody.

    A Squeemish Subject: Euthanasia

Quote: Thank you so much for posting this. Dry ice kills by releasing CO2, which causes suffocation. If not done quickly using high levels (usually only possible on very small animals) it can result in a lot of panic and pain. It's a horrible way to go and has been made illegal to use on...

    KFC vs Tyson

They're all vile! I suspect that none of you would allow your chickens to be raised the ones you eat are. Factory farming is horrendous. If I could kill it, I'd eat it because I know it had a good life. Because I can't kill it I don't eat it.

    Beefing up a scrawny collie

Quote: SOOOO true! I just hate those Beneful ads and got my folks to switch foods after making them read the label. It would probably also be helpful to neuter your dog...that will probably assist with his weight!

What treat did your chickies get today?

A scoop of wiggly worms from the compost and a suet feeder full of purple cabbage and turnip greens.

Vet won't neuter yet. Do I dare take a chance?

If it's possible I recommend finding another vet. Yours is obviously really old school. You can now spay and neuter at 2 pounds, which is approximately 2 months! Perhaps you can educate your vet by referring him/her to the American Association of Feline Practitioners statement on early age...

    Calif. N.Central Valley/Foothills

Hi all! I'm in Sacramento and am new to chickens. We adopted 3 rescued hens about 2 months ago from Animal Place in Vacaville. I never thought I'd enjoy them so much! They're totally spoiled.
