will my "late bloomer" ever bloom?

Hi, everyone! Just wanted to check back in to say that our Olive (EE) FINALLY started laying at the end of January- nearly 5 months after the rest of her cohort started laying... I guess you could say that our easter egger follows the beat of her own drumstick. Bwock! bwock!

will my "late bloomer" ever bloom?

Hi, Mdelhomme! I have an easter egger that isn't laying yet, either. Pea comb on Olive is much smaller than your Ruby, but other than that, they look fairly similar... Olive is the only one not laying. No signs of being a "he", either. Maybe it's the waning light- I don't know if it matters as...

Why specifically straw in the nesting box? (The Gals don't like it!!!)

I am hoping this helps other newbs out there, too... I've heard straw is the best medium for nest boxes. (I've also heard it brings in nasty mites, as straw is hollow... I'd rather not invite that kind of trouble into the coop, if I can help it.) Meanwhile, my barred rock started laying, and...

    My chicken is broken.

ElysianAcres- wow, sounds like you have a great set up for your birds! We aren't allowed to keep roosters, here in town, and so, I don't have much experience to add in that respect- maybe it has something to do with where your Roo is on the pecking order? I have read about hens rejecting a roo...

    Egg Song a False Alarm

One of mine sang the egg song last week- I ran out the door to see which one it was, but she had stopped by then. I have since seen all three "squatting", but the barred rock is squatting the most. I'm guessing that I just have to resign myself to waiting for weeks, and hope it happens sooner...

    My chicken is broken.

I agree with ChirpyChicks1! That's quite a big change to go from 2 to over 30 in one space- hopefully they all have enough room! Also, any idea how old the 2 sex links that you got with the house are? It's my understanding- and I could be wrong, so please correct me if I am, everybody- but...

Barred Rock- 8 weeks. Roo or pullet?

Hi, aart! Thanks for your response... The barring thing you are referring to? Boy barred rocks have a lot more white in their barring, making them appear lighter, and often greyish.... The coloring on Bea, makes me think pullet- but I only have photos to compare her to, so I can't be sure...

    Black Australorp Hen or Roo?

Wow, he is handsome. Is he an Astrolorpe mix of some kind?

Barred Rock- 8 weeks. Roo or pullet?

I really do feel like her color and shape look "pullet-ish". But that comb and wattle have me wondering...

Barred Rock- 8 weeks. Roo or pullet?

So... My Buff Orp was a Roo- crowed at 11weeks! And then there were 3. Still nervous about the barred rock, "Beatrice". Anyone care to reassure me that "she" is a she?

    Black Australorp Hen or Roo?

Oh, man, that makes me noivuhs! HE looks just like my "pullet" of 16 weeks... Do you have a current photo?

    Portland, Oregon

Hello, Fellow Portlanders! We got our chicks at Naomi's- love that store, everyone is so helpful and friendly. Since we got heritage breeds, (and on the advice of a friend) we got 4 chicks instead of 3 as "rooster insurance", and man, am I glad we did. Our Buff Orpington is definitely a roo...

Is my Tilly a Tilly or a Billy?

Ive heard that Barred Rock Roos tend to be lighter in color than pullets. How old is your little buddy? Somewhere between 8 and 12 weeks? Considering the intensity of the red comb and wattles, (hens don't get red until POL), coupled with the appearance of his feathers, which seem to be lighter...
